Found this incredibly useful application recently (cant believe I didn't find it sooner) that can make almost anything done on a computer easier/quicker. Especially if you do repetitive things. It is a little bit on the techie side I suppose but much of it can be learned by anyone.
Here is a description I ripped right from the website -

AutoHotkey is a free, open-source utility for Windows. With it, you can:

    * Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder.
    * Create hotkeys for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey.
    * Expand abbreviations as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way".
    * Create custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars. See GUI for details.
    * Remap keys and buttons on your keyboard, joystick, and mouse.
    * Respond to signals from hand-held remote controls via the WinLIRC client script.
    * Run existing AutoIt v2 scripts and enhance them with new capabilities.
    * Convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on computers that don't have AutoHotkey installed.

I use it mostly at work but, it comes in handy at home too.

There was one I used back in the day and it was great. This sounds like a keeper other than that it is windows only.

For us non-techie types, can you give more examples or applications for this? It does sound good.

Could somethung be programmed for filling out forms. Like when I work on my gig calendar for myspace I have a lot of gigs that repeat with only the date changing. The way its set up you have to retype the whole thing.
a group of us, on peyote, had little to share with a group on marijuana

the marijuana smokers were discussing questions of the utmost profundity and we were sticking our fingers in our navels & giggling

Try this or this, that is, if you use Firefox.

Peeps who dont need or want macros might like clipomatic. I use autohotkey to speed up typing although I am starting to abandon this in favor of using vocal commands with dragon naturally speaking. Its easier than it sounds although I still feel like a dick talking to my pc ;p

maybe to use a remote control to switch over an MP3 player?

kemp

Not sure what you mean, "use a remote control to switch over an MP3 player".... but, if it can be done with a keyboard or a few mouse clicks, you can certainly do it with Autohotkey, likely much faster. It can also respond to commands from other HID devices, like remotes, but that might be slightly more complicated.

Try searching the Autohotkey.com forums and I bet you will find someone else who already asked your question.... or post your question there with a little more detail, never know, you might get an answer. :bcool:
