In order to facilitate a more coherent decision making system, we need to have a board of directors. By this I mean that there should be a limited number of members whose job it is to authorise actions to be taken regarding the spiritplants conglomerate :D

The decision making process should be public, this forum is a perfect place for it, if there is some way to set up a voting system that is limited to certain users that would be very helpful. Having non-directors being able to put in their ideas is a good idea too, but there needs to be a clear delineation of authority, and it needs to be democratic.

There needs to be a submission of candidates and elections open to all members

Because this thing is no longer one person's thing, there is a power vacuum and we need to fill the gap.

Well, i think i can start this thing off, please everone give a list of users who you think should be nominated for the board.

My nominations go to nitroburn, cassie, jrl, laughingwillow, cenacle

(so there's a counter vote for you nitro :D)

The conflicts we are experiencing here are merely organisational/executive issues. Lets sort it out!

Take into concideration what each person is willing or able to contribute.

I have a good handle on tech things so I can certianly help with that.

we need a director with their finger on the tech pulse

i forgot to add andy, the gracious donor of hosting for this place :/

which brings up the point of stakeholders... so being the chatroom host/admin that puts you in an important position too, nitro. and the issue of stakeholders is why it needs to be democratic in the selection process. We should have someone in charge of maintaining the system, a secretary so to speak.

Ok, unless someone more senior than me wants to take this on, i will submit to be the moderator of this process. I suggest that we put a deadline on nominations, my thinking is a week from now, which is say, 3rd of february. Please somebody make this post sticky, if possible highlight it so that it is on the main page so that proper community involvement can be fostered :D

A new thought also, membership on the board should be implicit in the provision of services to the organisation. Therefore anyone involved in hosting a service associated with spiritplants should be on the board by default, since their technical skills and civic service make them indispensible, and ensure that the board takes technical issues into consideration at all times.

The moderators and admins are the directors ... all the moderators from the old site are back now and we are a new team, only recently selected based on interest and activity ( that's why we are all here already).

It needs to be clearly defined cassie, or else people don't know where they stand. LaughingWillow made that quite obvious. Would you like to add your nominations, since you know the people much better than I do. I thought you were a champion of consensus decision making and a student of political science? I don't see how moderating gives authority beyond the forum one is assigned to. And even the job of moderating is made difficult by the absence of a proper mandate and policy.

Please nominate people you feel should be a part of the executive team :D

Once the date for nominations is past I will gather the list together, counting how many people nominated who, and then I will have, by then sorted out a way to operate a voting process.

this is not just your place, it is *our* place, would you not like to see that it reflects its constituency?

This is the only way to ensure that we get no sour grapes from any quarter.

I would also like to add Elfstone to my list of nominations, since he is a respected member of the community also.

I nominate myself as Figure Head Supreme!!

This position will have nearly no responsibilities.  However, when members have grievances they can come to me.  I may or may not listen, and my decisions will be final and binding :P

Also, members can feel free to kiss my rump to try to gain privilege.

well, i subscribe to the taoist idea of leadership - which means that i have no desire for privilege, hence i would prefer to just be an active person putting out my ideas rather than any kind of authority. I guess my design for the executive embodies that, i'd feel most privileged to be a part of the board but I feel that good ideas have more power than individual persons, so regardless of my position, i will just keep participating. Thankyou for your vote of confidence in my ideas... they are not really my ideas, i have spent a long time studying the subject of leadership and interpersonal dynamics so i have absorbed a lot of ideas.

I have posted to the spf radio mailing list to get more ppl to put their nominations in too, this process does not work without maximum participation.

could someone make this thread sticky plz?
