g2h: The traditional shamanic drumming that I've been exposed to consisted of a steady, droning beat that is used to guide a shaman into and back out of the spirit realm.

Under normal circumstances, a live drummer would be used by the shaman. This allows for sonic interractions to happen between the involved parties: The drummer can drum the shaman in and out as the situation decrees. With a tape, the length becomes an important issue, imo. In this scenario, the shaman is more or less forced to conform his/her journey to the length of the recording and the sonic markers pre-determined by the drummer.

On the other hand, most drumming can be used for shamanic purposes, imo. I'd like to send you some examples I've collected over the years.

I'd also like to start a project of recording a few percussive tracks myself, with the shamanic journey in mind. You'll get the first copy.

Thanks for helping to ferment that idea, bro.

Thats a good idea LW.  I know we have several drummers and people with nice recording equipment around here.  Maybe start an archive of a few tracks.
...and as if from the inception of time itself I realized I was and had been for sometime, elsewhere, elsewhen or somehow, quite seriously, otherwise...

Here's a site I just stumbled across that resonated with me a bit.

geocities.com/talkingdrumpub/

(Oops! Live link edited due to close association with musical instrument vending site. ) Sneaky buggers almost had me there....

This reminds me of the guiness world record that I hold with 5,000 others for largest drum circle.  It was led by mickey hart and planet drum.  No words can describe the journey that we all had that day.  The earth was shaking and opening up her soul for our music.  That moment seemed like an eternity.  Time stood still, birds circled our circle, my feet became a large taproot, buzzing with the ethereal vibrations of life.

I agree with LW's point in regard to recorded drumming, I believe one should have an assistant drum while visiting the underworld.  a trick I like to use is too imagine a dark cramped hole in the ground from your youth, be it a hole in a tree or a wall, but preferably a natural entrance.  Foloow the hole while the drumming begins and soon, one will be inside, inside of what though is the question.

Right on, neo.

I use an old hollow elm tree from my youth that was visible from me bedroom window.

This thread is bringing back interesting and pleasant memories from a mispent youth. I can remember my first journey (and encounter with first spirit helpers) like it happened yesterday.

Well, well......

I accompanied the wife on a trip to buy some wireless pc hardware for her work. In the process, she caught a glimpse of the G-4 mini mac with 8 gig hard drive, firewire and a dvd player/cd burner. The unti is 2.5" x 6.5" x 6.5" and weighs 2.5 lbs. So she found a 17" flat screen ot go with it and was asking the guy to wrap it up when I put the kibosh on the deal. I mean, who in the hell impulse buys a computer system?  I said, "no." She said, "but its so cute." We compromised and took the specs home with us. Looks like the system is all set up to burn discs, like I've always wanted. (I have hundreds of hours of live music on disc, but no burner. Wtf?) Garage Band software comes with the system as well. A fairly inexpensive connector will allow me to hook up a mic to the keyboard and record drum tracks. Sounds like I can even layer some tracks with this little trifle of a program, too. The bottom line: I think we have some shopping to do tomorrow. Heck, I could be laying down a shamanic journey track for you a lot sooner than expected, g2h....

Green2Herman, you probably won't like my sugesstion: Steve Lawler - Dark Drums. otherwise you can allways spin your vynils backwards:D
I use that trick often when I play on big parties. With effects it really rips the shorts.

How did it go with the CD by the way?

Also I am wondering if anyone now about a book about drumming with CD with it.

I am sort of since a couple of years looking in to "basic" skills for the more psycedelic shaman/exploring work. Drumming is sort of left on my list.
