it seems that a recent hardware failure has thrown a spanner in the works.

Seems to be hard to get anyone to see the sense in it, but what the hell... I am, and have been for the last 4 months or so, running a SILC server. SILC is like IRC but redesigned from the ground up with security concerns uppermost. Anyone who can install Gaim, an open source multi-protocol chat client can use SILC right now assuming they have a version newer than a year old (or so).

now, i don't want to seem like I am usurping anyone's position, but maybe it would be sensible to set this up for backup situations... Set up your gaim client to connect to the server m0c.no-ip.org on port 706 and join the room 'spiritplants' (unlike irc, channels don't have to have a # in front of the channel name) I will be there... dunno how many other ppl about can be bothered to learn something new but it's there anyway. My server reboots now and then but it's unlikely that it will be offline for long most of the time, and if anything is going wrong with it email mailto:l0k1@iinet.net.au and if my computer is on (about 99% of the time) it will make my mailbox monitor pop up my email client and if i'm awake (which is sadly too much of the time) i will be able to address the problem.

i dunno, i'm just a wee bit drunken and missing my favourite chatroom and i think that seeing as i have an always-on connection and am running servers that i'd love to be able to help in any way i can.

I like your plan, but htf do you set that up in gaim ? Maybe if you are on something like ICQ, or Yahoo let me know and I'll have a go.

lots of people get in through the java client. Check your browser and plugins. If in doubt pull the cord!
