Aloha all,

I've been a silent lurker at this and other plant boards for quite some while, and can quite honestly say that I've learned a lot from you folks.  Thanks for your profound knowledge and love of all things growing!

I have the good fortune of living in Hawai'i, where the flora really knows how to throw a party. In many of our parks, we have some ancient Baobab trees growing  (Adansonia Digitata, I believe), as well as some magnificent Banyans. Recently, I scavanged some pods from beneath the Baobabs, and not really expecting much, sanded and planted some of the seeds. Lo and behold, after about ten days, of the four seeds I planted, three have sprouted!

Anyway, I just thought that I'd offer some of these seeds to you, denizens of the SP boards.  These Boaboabs are massive and must take hundreds of years to reach their full size; nevertheless, perhaps one day our grandchildren might sit underneath one that we planted. Perhaps they could be bonsai-ed.

Trades would be wonderful, but if you have nothing to offer, then that's ok too.  I'll be happy to send some on anyway!

Please PM me if you're interested.

Hey Zaka,

Fantastic! It looks like a great germ rate.

I'm going to be near the mother tree today, so I'll take a few pics and post them soon. She's mighty impressive.

Grow in peace!

Best,

Hey all,

Well, I didn't make it to the park today (where I got the original seeds) but I was at the university, where they have another nice Adansonia Digitata growing.  Here's a shot of the tree with my bag for a size comparison.

I was talking to a professor who thought that this tree may have been planted some time near the end of WWII. I have no accurate idea either, though I'd guess that it's much older than that.

If anyone is still interested in seeds, feel free to contact me.

Grow in peace,

Irie Platy,
Thanks for the photo.
I have friends with a large old plantation estate where it can happily grow to that size!
