JOHN "MARMADUKE" DAWSON (1945-2009)

" John passed away peacefully on July 21, 2009 at the age of 64 in Mexico, where he had retired several years ago. It is with great sadness that we relay this news, and extend our deepest condolences to his family and all his many fans out there.

His songs inspired us in so many ways. His energy, passion and commitment to the New Riders brought us all so much joy over the years. We can all be thankful that his music and legacy will live on forever."

I had the honor of opening for the New Riders and hanging out with John. He WAS a big inspiration and will be missed
a group of us, on peyote, had little to share with a group on marijuana

the marijuana smokers were discussing questions of the utmost profundity and we were sticking our fingers in our navels & giggling

So appearently no one gives a fuck about a great man's passing.

Note to self: Find some kids closer to my age to play with.

Well, I wouldn't say no one gives a shit about the great man's passing. That ain't fair, imo.

But I've been thinking the same about needing to find a group of geezers closer to my age group, as I'm feeling the generation gap around these parts as of late.

Btw, RIP Marmaduke Dawson.

Lost my boots in transit, babe,
smokin\' pile of leather.
Nailed a retread to my feet
and prayed for better weather...

Well,I guess that fact that it had 4 views and 2 of them being me was not showing much respect. He WAS a great man, smart and funny.

Marmaduke: Ok right now we are gonna take urine samples from everyone here and if you don't test positive for something you are outta here.

J, I don't think it has anything to do with a lack of respect. There just hasn't been a lot of traffic around the whole forum lately.

Rest in peace, brother!   :smoke:3

HENRY
(JOHN DAWSON)

EV'RY YEAR ALONG ABOUT THIS TIME IT ALL GOES DRY
THERE'S NOTHING ROUND FOR LOVE OR MONEY
THAT'LL GET YOU HIGH
HENRY GOT PISSED OFF AND SAID HE'D RUN TO MEXICO
TO SEE IF HE COULD COME BACK HOLDIN'
TWENTY KEYS OF GOLD

NOW THE ROAD TO ACAPULCO IS VERY HARD INDEED
AND IT ISN'T ANY BETTER IF YOU HAVEN'T ANY WEED
HENRY'S DRIVING HARD AND STRAIGHT
ON TWISTY MOUNTAIN ROADS
THERE'S FIFTY PEOPLE WAITING BACK
AT HOME FOR HENRY'S LOAD

AND NOW HE'S ROLLIN' DOWN THE MOUNTAIN
GOING FAST, FAST, FAST
AND IF HE BLOWS IT THIS ONE'S GONNA BE HIS LAST
RUN TO ACAPULCO TO TURN THE GOLDEN KEYS
HENRY KEEP THE BRAKES ON FOR THIS CORNER IF YOU PLEASE

HENRY GOT TO MEXICO AND TURNED HIS TRUCK AROUND
HE'S TALKING TO THE MAN WHO HAS IT
GROWING FROM THE GROUND
HENRY TASTED, HE GOT WASTED, COULDN'T EVEN SEE
HOW HE'S GONNA DRIVE LIKE THAT IS NOT TOO CLEAR TO ME

AND NOW HE'S ROLLIN' DOWN THE MOUNTAIN
GOING FAST, FAST, FAST
AND IF HE BLOWS IT THIS ONE'S GONNA BE HIS LAST
RUN TO ACAPUCO TO TURN THE GOLDEN KEYS
HENRY KEEP THE BRAKES ON FOR THIS CORNER IF YOU PLEASE

SUNDAY AFTERNOON TIJUANA IS A LOVELY TOWN
BULLFIGHT BRINGS THE TOURISTS AND
THEIR MONEY FLOWING DOWN
THE BORDER GUARDS ARE MUCH TOO BUSY
THERE AT FIVE O' CLOCK
HENRY'S TRUCKIN' RIGHT ON THROUGH,
HE HARDLY EVEN STOPPED (REPEAT CHORUS)

I told Marmaduke I was doing Henry with my band, he said "record it and make us both some money". I told him that when I did it I said something about "everyone needs a hero but don't try this at home"
He laughed and said " he was a hero"
So I said "was Henry a real person?"
"He was anyone that ever tried it. Border guards are much to busy, yeah right"and laughed.

One my favorite memories.
