This is a picture of my Psychotria spp. seedling.

Are most Psychotrias slow growers?

Zaka

Irie Dog,
Here the Psychotria V I have growing....
The spot I have them in started getting more shade as we neared the solstice, there was a huge increase in growth and the smaller seedling, which were struggling, really perked up.
Found the Caapi did likewise.
I'll have to place these to take the morning sun, (we usually have showers at 6am) then shade the rest of the day.

Well I hope the ipecacs do ok for you. Im not sure if I would call it this but id say my ipecac plants get filtered sunlight and /or it isn't all the time which may be good for them.

Im not sure if full sun in a southern exposure outdoors would be ok or not?   Mine get maybe 2-5 hours a day but then again not all light is in the visible spectrum. Im sure they still get light even on the cloudy days and when i cant see it getting sun.  They are inside in a south facing window.   I mean im sure it is filtered somewhat since they arnt outside.

The problem is this last winter my Tabernaemontana orientalis grew very slow since they were by a cold window. Im sure growth is directly proportional to temperature.  If temperature is below 60 degrees growth rate slows down alot.  I will probably have them near a window in a heated bedroom this winter.

I know for Salvia divinorum full sun isnt good, but neither is full shade.

Salvia divinorum actually likes some sun but not intense sun like say around 1:00pm on the south side of the house.

Ive noticed Salvia divinorum likes western exposure and the sun is probably not as intense then as it is in the middle of the afternoon.

Around 4:00pm is when the sun would hit my Salvia leaves and they seemed to like it.

Im not sure if Psychotria ipecacuanha or Psychotria viridis are shade loving plants?  They do take about the same time to germinate which i generalized and expected with the ipecac seeds.   3 months is what i found online for P. viridis.  P. ipecacuanha also took 3 months.

Irie Dog,
QuoteIf temperature is below 60 degrees growth rate slows down alot.
Yeah bloody right so does my growth rate. I.....Can't take them cold temps, personally! :smoke:3
It's seems that the afternoon heat here is much more intense.
But I guess living your climate, you could do with as much heat as possible.
I'm sure they will do good here....everything does....except for the friggin rue....bloody impossible effin plant.

Yes, psychotrias are slow growing and prefer shade. They can take cold down to freezing but prefer it to be warmer.

Yes, although some species are native to southern Florida onetime i saw a Psychotria nervosa growing in a botanical garden in Gainesville Florida which is pretty far  north in Florida ( only 2 hours  south of the Georgia border) and Gainesville does get at least 1 or 2 freezes a month.   I don't think the freezes last more than 5 hours usually.   I was suprized kava kava can take freezes.

I figured kava kava was like a zone 10 plant.  It might freeze to the ground but I dont think Florida freezes usually damage the roots of plants to much.

Kava kava is hardy in Northern Florida.

I think psychotria spp. is a slow grower,
as it requries full shade to grow.  I had
some psychotria viridis plants that I grew
under a flourescent light, that seemed alot
quicker to grow at just using the shade to grow.

Irie,
These are ipecac seedlings....about 4 wks..

I think psychotria spp. is a slow grower and
has to remain out of the sun if it is going to
grow.  If the psychotria ever sees sun ever
one time; the psychotria will die then.  My
best experiences with psychotria were to grow
them under flourescent lighting indoors.

Hi Jamison

I agree psychotria does not like the sun very much. I would not go so far as to say any sun will kill them. A new seedling or clone put out for the first time, maybe. They are kind of slow growers but if you get a bunch of them they do alright.

Nice photos Zaka.

Amomynous

My psychotria gets sun/dappled sun all day during the summer and has never complained.

Zaka

Irie,
Mine are now getting about 7hrs of direct/dappled sunlight.
Although in this photo they are tucked away with the Virolas cos of a passing tropical storm.

I have 100 big Pv trees/bushes, and thousands of seedlings. Yes, they prefer shade. But they will tolerate full sun, and will adapt. I have 10' tall trees in full sun, doing great. But babies definitely prefer shade. Hawaiian tropics.

The leaves will go chlorotic with intense sun exposure, and will shrink and edges curl. But water saves them, and when cloudier/cooler conditions return, they will recover and green up and grow. Drought is their nemesis.

Well when I used to grow Salvia divinorum i noticed they also prefer shade.

They can take sun just not intense midday sun such as what you get on the south side of the house in the open with no tree cover or shade.

All the leaves will turn brown and fall off, but new leaves will form which are adapted to tolerate more sun.  I still dont think Salvia divinorum is meant for full sun.

I think the best sun for Salvia divinorum is west facing sun.  Have it in a place that gets shade during most of the day but like say around 4pm then give it sun.

I always thought Psychotrias were considered understory trees/ shrubs in the rainforest?

I heard that is true of most members of the family Rubiaceae including the well known coffee plant.

Stonehenge

Yeah, pv has always done better with some shade but they don't mind a little sun. Sally is a hard plant to grow compared with pv.
