Irie,
These are actually roadside plants.....I'm just setting up a Cactus display in my garden....just gotta dig out a star jasmine...hummm what should I do with that???
The Big Cereus is in a graveyard........a great place to collect seeds & cuttings..
There are a bunch of really big barrel cactus on the east coast that I want to get round to..
I am dab hand at eyeballing plants, especially orchid, at 50mph!!!

You can grow cacti almost anywhere. Some types are better adapted to strictly arid climates and too much annual precipitation will cause rot, while others tolerate subtropical moist climates, and others tolerate cold and dry,  cold and wet with proper drainage for some species of Opuntia.

It seems to me that Florida is ok for some Opuntia and most Trichocereus.  The desert species of Echinocereus as well as some Opuntia won't grow in Florida and are prone to disease with the high rainfall they get there.

Escobaria vivipara grows as far north as Canada.   Pediocacti also tolerate cold with no problem, but hate heat and I think also hate getting too wet.   Pediocacti are probably hard to grow outside of Mountain climates unless you can provide proper drainage.     You wont find too many people in subtropical Arizona growing Pediocacti.

Echinocereus viridiflorus is hardy in Minnesota.  Ive noticed Opuntia polyacantha does well in Minnesota even though the area where the seeds were collected is much drier climate.  Alberta, Canada is drier but probably colder than most of Minnesota.
