QuoteThe original casting of this 8 ribbed beauty was taken in the Chihuahuan desert, a region with much colder winters than south Texas. Tenaciously weathering freezing winters by growing on the southern, sun-facing slopes of its mountainous home, this individual embodies the power of its kind.
Some scholars have classified this as a distinct subspecies, more potent and slower growing than the varieties found in the south Texas areas known to the Native Americans as the “peyote gardens”.
Dr. Terry’s ground-breaking research has shown this northern variety to be genetically distinct from its southern relatives.

If the Lophophora genus really only consists of two species than that means that fricii = williamsii... with that in mind, the whole idea that all Lophophora williamsii are "potent enough" seems mislead to me.

I know some are more potent than other, and I'd wager many, many times more potent.

What we need to do is identify which ones are the best for ingestion so that the N.A.C. can cultivate them.

Harvest Peyote three to seven (3-7) years after it flowers, and after two to five (2-5) years "hard growth".

1) Obtain Lophophora williamsii = "Peyote" seeds.

2) Sow the seeds and grow the seedlings in a humid enviroment for six months to one year (6m - 1y) and then "harden then off" to a less humid enviroment.

3) Grow the seedlings as quickly as possible until they flower. Allow them to flower for a year or so, thus producing many seeds.

4) Begin "hard growth" to increase potency for three to seven (2-5) years.

5) After the Peyote cactus is five to thirteen (5-13) years past flowering age and has been "hard grown" for a number of years, it may be harvested following the proper method ensuring some areoles are left to produce new "Pups" or "Crowns".

The total process should take anywhere from 7-20 years if you start with seed until your ready to ingest Peyote. It's worth the wait.

*Note*- Never graft your Peyote if you intend to ingest it.

It makes it much less potent.

M S Smith

Quote from: "Teotzlcoatl"It makes it much less potent.

What evidence do you have for such a definitive sounding answer?  What would you say qualifies as "much less" as opposed to simply "less"?

The extensive listings of Lophophora are in most cases simply collection locations and should not be construed as meaning each location bears plants dissimilar enough from the other locations to warrant a different categorization in to subspecies or variations.  Nor should any such listings mean there are meaningful differences in alkaloid composition between one location and the next.

Teotz has obviously be studiously poring over my book for his "~ 'Peyotes' and other Psychoactive or Medicinal Cacti."  Should I be honored?  I'm not sure.

When ever citing Mr.Smiths work, Sacramental and Medicinal Cacti I am always sure to give him credit.

It's really a GREAT book for anybody interested in the subject.

Kada

there was a paper (i cant remember its name or author, im sure MS does!) that showed that grafted plants were still active.  i remember them being tested on myrtillocactus geometrizans and...??? (my memory is below par).  i have tasted my grafts on myrtle, pedro and stenocereus and all taste similar to seed grown plants.  i did try some steno grafts, and got the beginnings of a feeling -call it enlightening-, but that was with only 15-20 grams dried, so maybe not enough.
