Can anyone tell me if Neem oil can/should  be used pure or diluted on Salvia leaves.

Thanks

Neem oil should be always diluted when used on plants. Use directions on label If you have whitefly neem will kill them but so will dishsoap (diluted). I use thurgensis bacteria along with safers soap in a spray. The soap kills the flies on contact and the bacteria kills the crawlers. Be sure to hit the undersides of the leaves!

Thanks for that.  I'll give it a go.

I've never tried neem oil, but in my experience the only thing that gets rid of those fuckers is to squish them with your fingers. I think they're like roaches, a nuclear blast wouldn't kill them. When I had salvia plants, they were the bane of my existance. They like my Angel's Trumpet too, although they did seem to disappear for a while. I thought they were gone for good, but just yesterday I noticed them all over the place again. I swear I didn't sem them for about three months! Where the fuck did they come from?

Whiteflies are of the devil, I tell you.

White flies seem to bother but not kill Salvia with their infestation.

White flies don't seem to bother Brugmansia whatsoever despite infesting them wildly.

winder, are you talking about outdoors? I've noticed that too, whitefly often are no more than a pest. Indoors they can multiply unchecked and wipe out anything unless you spray like mad.

I am referring to indoors.

Indeed the outdoor situation is much different with natural predators to control these pests.  It seems here that in the late spring that the white flies are about to overwhelm the Salvia, but early-mid summer, the tide turns as the predators become more numerous.  By then, I quit spraying the Salvia.

But the Brugs really don't seem to care.  Maybe they grow so fast it just doesn't matter.  Also, the Salvia are often attached by aphids, which don't seem to touch the Brugs.

ah! good topic! what about using on a sun opener plant? of my collection, it seems to be the favorite for the little bastards. the trouble is it is so sensitive to spraying (ime).. using Ed's 0-tolerance.. i am a bit leary of trying other things on it.

heh, i thought they were gone too, but i brought her in for the winter and they are back in force! :x

TCO, I don't know how well it works on sun openers. The best thing to do is try it on a lower leaf or two and see how it does over the course of a day or two. If no problem, it will probably work fine.

Speaking of neem and whiteflies, I have been experimenting with a new tec. It combinesa neem with dmso in a dilute spray. The idea is that the dmso makes the neem work systemicly. I've been trying it on some fly infested plants and so far, it seems to help. I'll start a new thread on that later when I've had a chance to test if over a longer period.

I once had a whitefly infestation on my Salvia (and a few other plants). I tried neem and a lot of other things.

The only thing that worked in the end was sacrificing the plants and moving to another house (the move wasn't to rid myself of the pests, but it was a collateral benefit). It wasn't a happy day sacrificing my plants, but I couldn't take the chance of moving them to my new home. :(
