Hordenine, anhalidine, pellotine, 3-demethyltrichocereine, mescaline, dimethoxy--phenethylamine, and the N-monomethyl derivatives of mescaline d 3,4-dimethoxy--phenethylamine have been isolated or identified, or both, in caloid extracts of a Mexican "peyote" cactus, Pelecyphora aselliformis Ehrenberg. This is the first report of the occurrence of some of these alkaloids, including mescaline, in a North American cactus other than Lophophora.

Science 9 June 1972:
Vol. 176. no. 4039, pp. 1131 - 1133
DOI: 10.1126/science.176.4039.1131

I had no idea!  Anyone ever read this?  or hear about it?

Grafting a Pelecyphora aselliformis Ehrenberg on to a potent Trichocereus just might be quite an interesting alkaloid sack ;)

Here is an intersting expiriment. Take a high M containing rooted T. peruvianus and graft a P assellliformis on it.

Then, assay (using animals) the full grafted cacti (after suffican growth) with animals known to test peyote.  The placebo group would recieve "just" Trichos.

There are a lot of cacti that might work like this.

I'm not interested in hearing the old lists of "peyotes" but has anyone read shulgins IQ book?  or know of other interesting cacti with peyote  alkaloids (L. diffusa is obvious and not the best way to go for this post)

PS  I posted a note to myself earlier and edited my real post ;)

PM me.

I've got a big list of suspected "Lost Peyotes" if you want to see it...

Why wouldn't you just eat the cactus tho? Instead of the grafting stock?

Confirmed Active "Lost Peyotes" (by Human-bioassy)-

Ariocarpus fissuratus
Mammilliaria Craigii
