Seems he likes to go east more than play out here. When is Jackie Greene gonna play?

Got this from Jackie on myspace:

Jackie Greene to Join Phil Lesh and Friends this fall
Body:  Hello all,
I guess it's not much of a secret anymore, but I thought I'd give an "official" word about it.

I have been lucky enough to be asked to join Phil Lesh & Friends this fall for an extensive american tour! We will be starting in late September and rolling right up to November.
We will be playing some fantastic venues and it will be LOTS of fun.

I feel very honored to have been asked to take part in such a remarkable band. I am truly in awe of each of their talents.
Amazing! Check out the dates and the band here: http://www.phillesh.net/

We will be playing some of my tunes on this tour as well. And of course, lots of Grateful Dead tunes! I'm having a wonderful time learning and singing these great songs. It's truly a magical time. I feel blessed. I hope you'll join us out there.

Well, that was sure easy. The wife is all in.  We both enjoy spending time in Chicago. We'll prolly catch the Friday and Saturday shows, but I doubt we'll make it to all three.

I'm still blown away that Jackie got this gig. Quite an endorsment. I guess Phil wants to expand his demographic, young girls can't get enough of Jackie. A few years back before he broke big time he could pack a good size club in the middle of the week with a $15 ticket, and then do it again the next week. Hard to do in your home town.

I doubt Jackie was brought on board for demographics. That's a little silly, imo. I've never heard the guy perform, but do have faith in Phil's ability to put together a band.

I think both Phil and Bobby realize they won't be around forever and are looking to infuse the scene with young blood  of their choosing.

I've never heard Jackie. And I'd never heard Ryan Adams before Phil took him under his wing awhile back, either. But I DID enjoy the tour Ryan joined Phil. But there were many heads on-line not happy with Phil's choice of bandmate.

At least the Chicago run is 18 and over..... hehe

Jackie writes pretty good tunes, a bit derivative of Dylan and Neal Young. He looks a lot like Dylan did at that age (I think he's about 24). He has a big voice for a skinny little dude, sings Muddy Waters blues and stuff.

What he has is brilliant managment, the guy does stuff like book Jackie into the Newport Folk Festival on his 23rd birthday, same as Dylan did. Got him signed to a millon dollar deal with Verve, but I have heard some gossip that he was released from the contract after his first CD didn't do as well as anticipated.

I wouldn't assume that Phil does not make decisions in part based on business concerns, it's tough out there these days. Thats the yoga of rock and roll, how do you keep it real and viable at the same time? Phil seems to be handling it with quite a bit of grace, but this is a tough time for touring acts.

Huh? To be honest, I'm sort of surprised that you see Phil's decision to tour with this kid as a bidness decision. jrl. From what I see on tour, Phil has no trouble filling the halls he chooses to play. (this band is set for a nine night run in NYC.) Taking jackie on tour introduces the guy to Phil's rabbid fans. This is more a favor to Jackie than to Phil, imo.

Btw, I'm guessing Phil would never have to play another paying gig if'n he didn't want to.

I remember the daze when da dead had to discourage fans without tickets from coming to the venues because the scene was just getting too big for Its own good.

Well those decisions are made on multiple levels for sure. It could be him wanting to expose a new generation to the wonders of real music. I agree it is totally a break for Jackie, makes me much more optimistic about his longevity.

Phil could survive for sure, but he's got an orginization and employees, plus his Phil- anthropic concerns. When Garcia died a bunch of people lost good jobs, losing health care and homes no doubt. The Dead have a history of treating their staff and crew well, with perks not often found in rock and roll. Anyone in business can tell you how expensive it is to have employees.

I don't mean to diminish the great man in any way, it's actually more in my admiration for his keeping of the flame with style and grace, while facing the realities of the earthbound part of what he does in this day and age. He has often said he misses the simplicity of the first days.

LONG LIVE PHILLIP CHAPMAN LESH!!!!!!

I'm just PSYCHED!!!! I mean, I am going to see Ratdog/Allman Brothers next month, and thats fucking great, but I am JONEZING for some Phil. Haven't seem him since Dec. 2005 and he is the one who carries the torch. Am I right LW?  8)

Charlottesville and Baltimore are the ones I am hoping for. We'll see.

Well, I'm sort of biased on this one, jiku-bro. I stumbled into the Phil zone during the second set of my first show and have been there ever since...

I've had a few intense experiences with RatDog, but Phil's shows are usually dripping with psychedelia night in and out.

I wish you'se guys would consider a weekend in the windy city...

Sunrise over the prairie was beautiful this morning. Highs expected to be in the mid 80's. We'll be heading toward Chicago in the next while in order to catch a couple of Phil shows. Even Laura is getting excited. hehe

With Da cubbies play-off game on Saturday night and the Chicago marathon running on Sunday, the windy city should be hopping, Phil Lesh bass popping!

Set lists look interesting so far...

Just pray they don't do Jackie's song "Mexican Girl". I heard they were doing it. When I heard it on the juke at Da Torch, I thought it was Jimmy Fuckin Buffet.

On a similiar note (a C sharp, maybe) I jammed with Jackies band boys the other night. Nate(Jackie's guit guy) said that Phil sat in with them at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz and that Phil bought Jackie an iPhone.
