Actually, this IS a baby and he/she was trying to land in the food bowl (cracking the seeds is another story). Wife and I were sitting near the feeder and he swooped up and landed on the brim of my hat, sat 10 or 20 seconds, then flew off.

This guy is totally tame. I went and got my camera, and that pic is as close as I could get with my lens in focus. I have a little handheld video cam and I held it 2 inches from him. I could have easily snatched him up and eaten him.

Chickadees are known for their trusting nature toward humans. This one looks to be shaping up as a regular family member or at least a special kitty treat.

really? thats interesting. i wonder what characteristics we have in common with finches to cause this trust? it could be that they are frequents to bird feeders, which are around human dwellings.

I don't think chickadees are that closely related to finches, so I'm not sure what the connection would be. But finches have been kept as pets for centuries, and one type of finch in the US allegedly started with birds escaped/released from captivity in NY, so go figure.....
