Does wheat work as well as rye grain for mushroom substrate? Are there any other good alternatives to rye?

Wild bird seed or plain millet.

The thing is I can't seem to find any of these fancy substrates around town. One would think rye grain would be easy to come by but I didn't even find any at the co-op. They did have whole wheat grain and millet. I either try some  alternative substrate or pay 15 dollars in shipping costs.

Paul Stamens said that wheat works as well as rye. I would think that the ratio of water to grain and all of the other parameters would remain the same. Does anyone know?

Are you experienced, looking for a more satisfying substrate? If not:

1. Go to grocery store.
2. Buy bag of wild bird seed, as close to plain millet as you can find.
3. Soak overnight, allowing "floaters" to come to the top, scooping them off.
4. Drain in a collander for 1 hour.
5. Shake and bake. Well, scoop and pressurize, whatever the case may be.

What about just bying a 'myco-bag'?  Oh HOrse dung?  Nothing good firefang for P Cyan, or cubes for that matter...?

Has anyone tried a myco-bag?

The shop where I used to buy rye closed and because I am too lazy to look for another one I just use Popcorn from the supermarket. Any grain will work as a substrate.
A picture from my latest grow. The substrate is popcorn and wheatstraw.

Oh yeah, forgot about popcorn. Haven't tried it, but I've heard of good results.

What kind of bad luck? Contamination? Low yield? My experience is WBS cased in 50/50+, and I was blown away especially compared to previous cake experiments.
