Salvia as a indoor plant and pets

Hey everyone. the more I read, I see it's best to grow your own plant. The bad thing is I have a few cats, dogs and a ferret. Though my pets have never attacked plants, I really don't have any plants in the house. Has anyone ever seen thier pet munch lightly on a salvia leaf only to find them spinning in a circle 30 minutes later meowing "Number 9, number 9, number 9....)?

No.  I have a cat and a dog and many dogs visit my house.  None ever seem interested in the plants.  I know people who grow salvia with dogs and cats and they likewise haven't had problems.

Salvia leaves are rather bitter so I doubt the ferret would like them.

My situation:

I live with my parents who know I'm into drugs and realise I smoke Salvia on a somewhat frequent basis.  They're okay with me growing it and I might be having a kitten soon.  But I live in California in the San Francisco bay area (as far as climate goes) and was wondering, would it be a plant I can grow outdoors?  Or should I take my chances indoors?  Or not at all?  I have no idea how to grow Salvia and I've never grown much of anything at all, so I don't particularily have a green thumb, but it seems that I pick up on things (no matter what the case) very easily and can probably acquire one in no time.

So basicaly.. what are ya'lls opinions?

It is an important plant to grow.  Get one while you can.

Grow it indoors to start it going.  
Start taking clones and moving them outside.
Before long you should have a jungle of salvia.

There was a guy around here who had a nice patch of outdoor salvia plants in San Jose, CA.  As I remember they did good outside there.  He covered them on cold nights.

do some research too....they'll be fine down below freezing, but not for long....you can grow them outdoors for 9 months   We have frosts here but no hard freezes, and even then, covering them, or providing s abit of heat would help them....Easy to grow once they get a  above one foot or so, otherwise, watch out for overwatering and wet mucky soil....grow them as you would an orchid or a coleus...good luck

My cats do okay getting the salvia into the pipe, but they can't work the lighter.
