what do you guys feed your plants?
a group of us, on peyote, had little to share with a group on marijuana

the marijuana smokers were discussing questions of the utmost profundity and we were sticking our fingers in our navels & giggling

oops, sorry. I thought the subject was salvia farts. I'll start a new topic about that.

Spending a little too much time with the Mensa geniuses eh there Trout?    Hey JRL, I think the best two people to inform you on this topic is TooStone and/or Bongo, as both know their Sally quite well.  In my opinion, I would only water when the soil is almost dry, give a very dilute mix of good ole MiracleGrow once in a while, decent sun but not blazing, and pretty much don't baby them.  They are very much IMHO like orchids. All of this of course is just my humble opinion and the above mentioned guys could probably fill ya in much better.
People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

I'm cautious and use salvia ferts (and farts) sparingly.  If a plant has been in a pot too long, probably best to repot it with some fresh soil.  If you want them to flower, cutting the ferts going into "winter" (12/12 lighting) seems to help.  Otherwise, I'll use a weak miracle grow 20-20-20 solution or whatever hydroponic stuff might be laying around mixed to a 20-20-20 ratio. 6.5 ph. About 1/4 teaspoon per gallon a few times with regular watering, and then not fert again for a couple of months.
...and as if from the inception of time itself I realized I was and had been for sometime, elsewhere, elsewhen or somehow, quite seriously, otherwise...

All farts aside, I agree with the others. I typically use Miracle Grow potting soil for everything and it contains fert. Beyond that, I add some Miracle Grow to the water every once in a while. I should make this past tense since I no longer grow salvia. I stopped growing after harvesting my 100th lifetime supply. :)

I tend to be pretty random about fertilizers....I apply lots of compost, orchid foods, leftover foliarr sprays, granular stuff....seaweed products, alittle bit of everything that is used here on our other gardens....Never have burned anything, but I do follow instructions......

Salvia doesn't mind a bit acid soil which do make things a bit easier. You can for example use artificial fertilizers. And also treat problems with teas from other plants without to much risks.

TSTT certainly knows more about how to get them to flower than I do as I have not had a single plant flower yet.
I use a 15-6-6 chemical fertilizer on my indoor plants about twice a month and mist them with a weak solution of this maybe once every other day.

On my outdoor plants I use fish emulsion pellets, and the above mentioned fert about once a month.

Jupe without doubt is the biggest outdoor grower I know untill thje tree fell on his patch. He had some great plants with stems 6 foot tall.
So, he knows the deal for that and indeed for getting them to flower so well outside.

You could cheat and use that plant that get flowers to flower. Not that I remember the one now. I tried that last year and got two of mine to flower. Funny enough they got a grow spurt after the flower ended and got bigger compared to the ones I didnt manipulate.

haha thanx Bongo...the 10 bucks is in the mail......they actually topped out at 12 ft. before//"the incident" .........    anyway.....flowers appear at 10 1/2 hours of daylight.....then come and go for 3 or so months..... I think you should avoid topping them for about one month before IF you wish them to flower, as it sets them back I think.   so they flower naturally outdoors if left alone, ut indoots, lights levels should be dropped.  Hope this helps.

Hey everybody.  I think this is my first post since the old forum, but I'm sure many here remember me as having lots of salvia growing and always having cuttings to send out.  I didn't even know this forum existed until a couple weeks ago.  I was so glad to see it is back!

Anyway, ferts.  I like to do it all organic and only use fish emulsion and kelp extract(thrive alive).  I used to use miracle grow etc. and now that I am only organic I think they are greener and healthier and happier.  I feel better about it anyway.  I was afraid of the fish emulsion at first but the kind I use was surprisingly unstinky, I even use it inside in winter a little and not too bad.  The thrive alive really helps with flowering if that is what you're going for.

hey Fract welcome back....What do you think about foliar feeding?

I think foliar feeding is great!

Sometimes when they are outside and it rains a lot they look a little yellow and I want to feed them but worry about too much water.  That is always a good time to foliar feed.
