Haiku like most Japanese culture such as Bonsai is simply mind bondage.
I know, I live here in Japan and when foreign people tell me how wonderful Japanese gardens look, I tell them the gardens are created just like the people here with wires binding their branches to bend them in the manner they consider pleasing to the eye. It is nothing more or less than torture.
Trees and people should be left to their own devices to twist, spin and stretch in the directions they want to.
Strangely enough, right now the Japanese government is trying to get people to remove their jackets and neckties in the summer,  for what they call “Cool Biz” or cool business, so they can turn the air conditioning up 1 degree in the summer to save money and resources.
To help this occur even though last year we had 42C temps for many days in the summer, the government has released a pamphlet with photos explaining how to remove your necktie, jacket & look respectable.
The rest of Asia naturally conducts business in Aloha shirts or something similar.
The Japanese have been bound like their Bonsai trees or haiku for so long they can't even go to work without a fucking tie on.

Sorry, but there is nothing cool or natural about Japanese culture.
At least not anymore.
