Damn.  I'm surprised, but not that shocked.

I wonder how feasible/difficult it would be to fashion a device that could jam nearby hidden mics?  Ideally, it'd be something small you could reach in to your pocket and switch on when you enter a store.  If they were simple and cheap enough to fashion, you could plant them in commercial sites likely to have audio surveillance.

Makes me wish I knew what I was talking about.  :D

I have heard of cell phone jammers.  They are illegal as they basically transmit interferrence on many frequences, as I understand it.  Probably could do something similar to jam microphones.  If they are hard wired, might need something different.  Good idea though.
...and as if from the inception of time itself I realized I was and had been for sometime, elsewhere, elsewhen or somehow, quite seriously, otherwise...

This is the wave of the future so get used to it. Not only private business but government is doing this. Don't expect them to make a big announcement about it either. I predict that some day, every move you make outside your house will be recorded for posterity. It use to be they would only keep surveillence tapes for 24 hours unless something suspicious was seen. With digital storage becoming cheaper and cheaper, it will get to the point they never delete anything. They could go back 20 years and tell you what you did on a certain day.

The police state is here and getting more powerful every moment. It will deter crime but personal freedom will be gone. They won't even need detectives, they will send you a letter telling you what you did. You will be allowed to mail in the fine or a bored cop will arrest you if you make a stand. No point contesting it, all the evidence will be right there. Enjoy what's left of your freedom while you still have some.

That's why it's fun to walk around, whenever one is forced to frequent some mall shop, mumbling shit like "shop lifting is not a crime","liberate consumer goods", "satan loves you" and the like.

The current issue of Wired has a story on the Chicago police department's new database/streetcams and soon-to-be in-car computer system.

Don't pick your nose in Chicago. Or loiter on a street corner.
