I just sent a pm to den outlining the events of this past weekend and then figured some around here might get a kick out of this story, too...

So, I live-trapped a young wild cat a few weeks back. She had been living in our neighborhood and was hunting our feeders pretty hard. I'd tried to get close all summer with no luck. I finally borrowed a live-trap from a friend when the weather started turning cold. It was easy to tell she was preggers as soon as I got up close. The vet said she was a couple weeks away from throwing kitties. So I spent the last couple of weeks trying to socialize her to humans and our two cats.

Anyway, on Friday night I went to bed around 9 pm. I was beat and the wife and nephew were watching a movie in which I had little interest. As soon as I'd laid down Daisey hopped up on bed with me and lay on her side for the first time ever. I petted her a bit and she rolled on her back. SO I figured she wanted a little tummy rub. When I put my hand on her belly, I could feel it viberate with contractions distinct from her purring. Then she sat up, let out a couple of yelps and bit me hard on the hand a few times. The first kitty was born about five minutes later. I fell asleep between number three and four. And number four needed help out of the birth canal. AS did number five. About then, our tom made his way back home and into the bedroom for the first time that night. Mommy saw el cid and started moving the litter to the closet next to the bed I'd prepared days earlier. Number six and seven were still born. I went to sleep then, thinking she was surely done. (First time cat mothers average between 2 ans 4 kitties.) The next morning a head count showed six healthy kitties. That number has really almost been too much for the little gal, imo. But she's let me help her all the way. She goes to eat and find the litter box pretty much only when I'm in the bedroom. And she's let me handle them as if they were my own. No shite. We prolly won't forget that night for awhile...

ps: Little-miss just slipped out the door when I was letting the other cats out. She's hella fast without all that excess bagage. So I just sat and watched for a spell. Then when I figured she'd had enough fresh air for today, there was no catching her. All of my efforts just drove her further and further from the house. I finally resorted to foul play be going into the house and fetching a little coal-black kitty. I sat down in the middle of the yard and turned the little fuzz-ball onto its back until it let out a few pittiful screeches and whines and little miss Daisey-Mae was back in da house in no time flat. hehe

Hey, judah.

I might see if'n I can fire up my old digital camera. If not, we should have a new one for Hawaii, anyway.

We plan on keeping daisey. That would make three cats. Plenty for me. However, Laura might have a notion to keep one of the little ones. I'm not sold on that plan, yet. We'll find good homes for the kitties in question. And mommy will be getting fixed after the fur balls are weaned.

I'm hoping she'll stick around after that. Winter might domesticate her quick as anything. But we ain't folks who lock up our cats, for the most part.

What a wild couple of days here on the prairie. Mommy went from Daisey Mae to Crazy D in a hurry after throwing those kitties. While preggers, she was content to keep the peace with our other two big galoot of cats. But that detante ended with the birth of her litter. Yesterday Cid followed Daisey to the litterbox and acted like he was going to attack her whilst she did her duty. Not only didn't Crazy D back down, but once Cid tired of the game and turned around to leave, she hunted him down, bit  him on the ass and made him cry uncle before letting him up. Now any time she gets near another one of our cats, she tilts her chin down, puts back her ears and gives them a big dose of stink-eye while lifting a front paw in anticipation of the blow to be delivered.  Da bee-atch is crazy, weighing in at around six pounds while the other two are prolly over 15 lbs. Luckily, I apparently fall into a protected class of conscripted baby sitter or something.  hehe

I have never had the craziness of a litter of kittens.

Enjoy them while you can.

Soon, they will be into so much, your house will be a shambles.

Keep them out of the cactus garden.

Awesome! Keep an eye on the other cats though, I know its hard to imagine, but I have seen barn cats raid the litters of other cats for food...
