Has anyone here have any experience going to the hardware store to find parts to make a water pipe? I've done it before, but I'm wondering if there are any parts already known to be ideal as a bowl and stem..

I assume many parts will be a little different from american hardware, I'm in Australia now..

Any thoughts?

A lot of parts for metal pipes can be found on old lamps. Stems, bowls, mouth peices, elbows... heh, everything but sleeves.

Dunno bout hardware stores though.

I've always been fond of using the soles of old shoes, dry-wall screws, and epoxy resin.  I can draw a diagram if you'd like.

take a gourd or hollowed winter squash and cut a round hole in the side.
stick in a carrot, (whittled down if need be) with a bowl cut in the end and drilled with a coat hanger.

course for a cool smoke you can just carve a bowl and toke hole in an apple and when the munchies come just get rid of the evidence.

Don't forget the hibachi dirt weed bong.  If you're buying your bong at the hardware store, you probably don't have the best weed either. hahahhaha

...and as if from the inception of time itself I realized I was and had been for sometime, elsewhere, elsewhen or somehow, quite seriously, otherwise...

lol, TooStoned, that's about as bad as turning your toilet into a bong!! Well... not quite as bad, I guess.

Could you attach a vacuum pump and run lines through a house? Giant automatic hookah-style?

Without water, can it be called a bong?

My stash is ok, its from New zealand. Had a lot of it over the easter holidays camping by the ocean. wow that was nice.

yes I am low on cash! I'm an american in australia and I have an under the table job working at a school cafeteria. I feel very glamorous.

I went to target and found a converter for a barbeque gas tank. The bowl is kindof big, more than twice the size of a normal one you would find in a headshop but oh well, just pack more in it I guess! But, what I want to know is a larger bowl less efficient than a smaller one? I'm just wondering if too much of it burning at once would waste some of it up in un inhaled smoke like a joint does.. I like joints but they waste your stash.

I figured on using super glue to join the parts together: the stem and the bowl. Is that good or is there something better?

The size and shape of the bowl definitely has repercussions as far as the efficiency of the pipe.  I've found that if it's too narrow and deep, the combustion is far too efficient (which results in much of the substance being burned rather than vaporized and inhaled) and bowls that are shallow and wide are too inefficient, resulting in wasted vapors in the form of sidestream smoke and much toxic burning byproducts, making the smoke acrid on the lungs.  Also, the bowl being too deep results in a very bad taste after the first three hits.  I'd say the best bowl design is probably somewhere around 15mm wide and 20mm deep with a 2mm opening, with a slope shaped like an inverted titty.

Anybody else have any good dimensions?

a one toke bowl is the best for conserving the good stuff.  i forgot to mention bamboo.  a very nice bong may be made from a large bamboo stem w a smaller stem inserted for the bowl to rest in.  of course gluing it to a base is neccessary.  if you cut the bottom at a slight angle it is more user freindly.  they make nice gifts for discerning friends.

i've been making pipes for years.  it is a rewarding hobby.  antler pipes w braided leather tubular stems are excellent for the neo-primative bonding ritual.  the longer the stem the cooler the smoke.
