Maybe you could find some old macintosh power amps. I used to see them pre-ebay in the classified ads all the time.

Tube power is usually louder watt for watt then ss. As a bassie I have learned that it ain't the watts, it's how they are utilized. It's all about gain structure and headroom.

Tube amps are actually coming back in style with high end audiophiles.

I've been looking at a couple of sources of imported and then highly modified tube amps available from the company below, JoLida.

Check out the funky looking tubes. As far as I can tell, assembling a collection of tubes to change the sound might be a fun way to spend a little time....

Quote from: "laughingwillow"I told my wife that you said "hi" and she said you should keep your fucking mouth shut.

Well, I don't know what that means, just tell her I took my hi back, if she's gonna be like that.

Syd: LOL I was making a joke like you knew my wife personally. Going for a laugh. Nothing more. Sorry if you got the wrong idea. I was supposed tobe the injured party here, not you, bro.

Great to see you're having so much pleasure out of the upgrade....  Heck, don't feel guilty at all....  Breathe deeply and embrace your hedonistic/materialistic glee    ---  BTW, sounds like the missus might be a model worth keeping instead of going for an upgrade... Into audiophile quality sounds and such :D -------------  sal

you got to love that. Those Jolidas look nice, but not enough power for my rig. I bet they sound great.

This power bidness is interesting. Most tube amps put out less than 100 watts/channel. Many put out under 40 watts of Class A power. The amp Alan Yun, the founder of Silverline Audio, recommended an amp of as low as 7 watts to drive the silverline sr 15's I bought the other day. Seven watts/ channel. Imagine that. But that's way on the top end. I'll prolly end up with something more like the JoLidas or maybe a hybrid single end tube set up.

From what I've read, the tube amps aren't made to drive larger monitor set ups that are traditionally run by high powered solid state amps. Yun even dismissed the need for a subwoofer for all but the heaviest applications.

I've been amazed at the sound of soem of these audience recorded dead shows I've been listening to with the new subwoofer. Alan Yun must have never met mistah Phil. 40 Htz is just about where he gets started. hehe

The silverlines came in today. Quite the improvement right out of the box over the old yamahas.

The wife says I can't buy any more audio equipment until I have these pieces paid off. While that's not going to happen until mid April or so, I'm still peeping the ads for amps. Right now I'm keen on a carey integrated tube amp putting out 40 watts of pure class A or 80 watts class A?B ultralinear. With a sensitivity of 90 dB and the way these mini-monitors sound half-assed hooked up to the old nacamichi, I'm guessing 40 watts of class A would prolly do the trick, unless I step up to a single ended tube amp of even lower output. But a fella can dream, no?

40 class A watts is no joke, trust me. I "get" to play with all these middle aged wannabes(on the jam session I host) with more money than brains and their boutique(sp?) amps. You would be surprised how painfully loud 15 class a watts can be.
