It might be difficult to seek it out, but there is a new documentary out in theatres titled "In the Realms of the Unreal" and it is fantastic. It tells the story of a lonely old recluse named Henry Darger, a man who literally created an entire universe and the epic history to hold it up, all inside his head. Darger was so terribly scarred from his misfortunate childhood and the horrors of war that, seemingly without deciding to do so, he devoted more than 60 years of his life to the creation of an imaginary world which entailed entire shelves of paintings and drawings, records of events which took place and their toll, and a massive FIFTEEN-THOUSAND PAGE "novel" (the world's longest novel) about a group of characters in this world.

The film delves as deeply as sanely possible into Darger's mind and what results is a dizzying borderlands between reality and fantasy, between childhood and adulthood. It truly is amazing to behold.

Like I said though, probably hard to find, like that other arthouse documentary 'Rivers and Tides', but it is totally worth it, like 'Rivers and Tides' was.
