Just wanted to post a public thanks to mr and mrs varja-p for stopping by yesterday and spending a little quality time. While I was ready for the visit, I wasn't expecting the wealth of ethno-botanicals that also came my way. There are worse problems to have than deciding on which new pots to buy for the p vidres, B caapi, inebriating mint, etc......

And to top it off, in the midst of the festivities, varj decided to perform a little rooting experiment on our twisty baby black locust. Can't wait to see how that turns out. We have many friends who want copies of that deformed little tree.

Anyway, it was good to see you cats again.

Sounds like a good ol time, didja cook out as well?

laughingwillow

Naw, no food. Everyone was expecting a short visit. We just ended up having more fun in the garden than anticipated and goofed around longer than planned.

Hey thanks!

Had a really good time considering how little time we had to hang. This visit was pretty much 100% botanical in nature. We need to get together for good ol down home relaxation session next time!

The Gnarly Black locusts cuts are holding up pretty dern well right now (48hrs), and as I like to say, if it's not on it's way to dying thn it's on its way to rooting!

Here's a full list of the plants I brought along, Lw:

Heimia salicifolia
leonotis nepetifolia
calea z - non bitter variety
banisteriopsis caapi
Psychotria viridis
Sceletium tourtosum

I think I am forgetting one... Lol, too many plants for even me to keep track of!

I am getting together some cultivation and use info for ya as we speak.  :e_biggrin:

Avery L. Breath

Sceletium tourtosum is so pretty isn't it, just never had the nack of growing it myself.

VajraPirate

Yeah they are gorgeous. I hate letting go of them, but for LW or maybe Avery ;), I don't mind so much.  :P

Outdoors they seem to prefer a mix of sun and shade, with regular waterings. They don't require a lot of ferts at all, but keep a close eye on them once they start fowering. When I brought mine in last fall they were flowering. I put them under flouros and they continued flowering for a few months, and then started dying off.

I think if I could have stopped the flowering they might still be kicking, but these plants only have a max lifespan of about 3 years from the reading I have done, so that might have been your issue Avery. Perhaps they died of old age! :P

Oh and I wish we had done some grilling! A few years ago TSTT, Lw, myself , the wives and a few others got together for a SPF feast and LW did most of the cooking. He's a damn fine chef! The shrimp salad,mmm... We shoulda packed up some leftovers in dried ice and shipped it off to some who missed out, heheh.

As an aside, wouldn't Black Locust be amenable to air layering?

..and as an aside to an aside, in my fantasies the black locust, being the closest thing we have to an acacia in NA, is chocked full of visionary tryptamines. Wouldn't that be great? They are so plentiful and are so morphologically similar to other, potent plants!

Alas, in my research the locust seems chocked full of alkaloids, but not ones you would want to ingest :(

laughingwillow

I've also pondered the alkaloid make up of the black locust, amom.

We talked about air layering. If the clones don't take, I might have to give that tek a shot. Also, this tree throws out a ton of suckers, but they don't appear to be as gnarled as the mother tree. At least not at that young age. Varj also brought home a few seed pods, but I really doubt the twist will be present in the seedlings, but who knows?
