*New Rock Album: Dawes, *Nothing is Wrong* (2011) . . . We were lucky enough to see this Los Angeles indie-rock band when they recently opened for Alison Krauss & Union Station in Boston . . . blown away by a number of their songs . . . their new album, their second, is a leap ahead from their debut . . . strong, lovely, music, & the power of poetic lyrics makes them a band to hear now, & keep track of in the future . . .

*Classic Rock Album: The La's, *The La's* (1990) . . . This Liverpool band made one album, two decades ago, yet unlike a million other bands who've done the same, or made more than one album, they are not forgotten . . . indeed, their announced appearances at a couple of festivals later this year has enflamed talk of a second album arriving . . . their sound is raw, acoustic-y kinda, punkish folky, yet pristine, precise for all its scuff . . . and it grows on the listener over time, until by golly you realized you've heard their one damned album 20 times or more . . . it's that sneaky and good . . .

*Storybook Time: Chapter Eighteen of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Jim Croce, the great singer-songwriter of the early '70s whose gifted life was cut short at age 30 by a plane crash . . . happy to be back on the airwaves, always the renewed hunger after a week off . . . may it always be . . .

*New Rock Album: Old Crow Medicine Show, *Nothing is Wrong* (2006) . . . Stumbled across this Nashville Americana band not long ago, and WOW . . . they rock the bluegrass vibe hard, again, WOW . . . this album was their second, and picked because, of the three so far, it best represents their range of strengths & charms . . . hoping to be featuring a new album of theirs soon . . . WOW . . .

*Classic Rock Album: The Church, *Hologram of Baal* (1998) . . . This is the ninth album this show has featured by this legendary Australian psychedelic rock band . . . their music is pretty, shimmers, flows, bangs & bops . . . their lyrics are trippy as fuck, smart, crawl into the blood . . . their albums are strong from start to finish . . . they carry on with psychedelic rock like it's the most natural thing in the world to do . . . it is of course . . .

*Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Eighteen of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is The Great Society, Grace Slick's really good pre-Jefferson Airplane outfit, & some excellent cuts from a 1966 show of theirs . . . Recent run of days rising determined to meet the day with high expectations & see them through . . . it's the right way to live . . . dug deep in my head is the hard wish to continue on like this perpetually . . .

*New Rock Album: Gillian Welch, *The Harrow & the Harvest* (2011) . . . Recently discovered this amazing singer-songwriter, whose work in its weird depths & musical loveliness reminds me of Bob Dylan . . . with her partner David Rawlings, Welch tells beautiful stories of the weird ways of love, of the heart, of the hand . . . medicine for much of what ails . . .

*Classic Rock Album: The Jayhawks, *Tomorrow the Green Grass* (1995) . . . This Minneapolis band has long been a dear favorite of mine, though their music is not until now been so prominently featured on this show . . . but news of their recent reunion & pending album is cause for playing one of their best albums, the first one I heard many years ago . . . their music is called alt-country, perhaps indie rock, whatever, it is pretty, spritely, sad, funny, dear, endlessly memorable in the blood once heard . . .

*Storybook Time: Chapter Nineteen of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is The Fredric, a Michigan band that produced one marvelous album in 1968 . . . a hurricane approaches local shores, & people stock food & hurry around . . . this a prayer to all those who will face the sober, unbridled power of Nature this weekend . . .
