On this week's show:

New Rock Album: Tired Pony, *The Place We Ran From* (2010) . . . A kinda-sorta country-tinged indie rock supergroup including Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol & R.E.M's Peter Buck . . . country by intention but rock & roll by result, balladish to lysergical . . . fine, fine work . . .

Classic Rock Album: Spirogyra, *Bells, Boots, and Shambles* (1973) . . . This was a British folk/prog band for a few years in the early '70s . . . their third album is rangy melange of pretty folk, rocking out moments, & acid lunacy . . . an amazing roller coaster in sound . . .

Storybook Time: Chapter Seven of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May . . .

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Wye Oak & cuts from their excellent new EP, *My Neighbor/My Creator* . . . the summer days are drippy with heat, & the cooler autumn seems quite far off . . . but nothing is ever as far off as it seems . . .

On this week's show:

New Rock Album: Deer Tick, *The Black Dirt Sessions* (2010) . . . This Providence, Rhode Island indie rock band plays an earthy early-'70s rock that still sounds more contemporary than throwback . . . they know how to hit it hard, jam wildly, & also how to slow it down & still keep the intensity . . . a challenging, delightful, gifted young group I hope continues to play out its great potential . . .

Classic Rock Album: Billy Joel, *The Nylon Curtain* (1982) . . . This is the fourth Billy Joel album featured on this show . . . his early-'70s albums profoundly helped me make to September 1982 when this new album was released & I was free of high school hell, starting college . . . his eighth album, it finds him more ambitious than ever to make an album inspired by his deep love of the Beatles . . . as John Lennon had just recently been murdered, one could even call this his homage . . . all that said, it is a plainly great rock record, a beautiful suite of songs that runs a perfect course start to finish . . . as one who disdains the indulgent album lengths that digital technology currently allows, I say: this album is about 36 minutes long & very few can challenge it . . .

Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Seven of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May . . .

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is The Nice, a fine late-'60s UK prog-rock group later remembered primarily for being keyboardist Keith Emerson's launching pad to fame . . . books from the deep to the dishwater say change your mind & change the world, & there are days, sometimes just hours or moments, when I believe this & campaign the braid of voices in my head to heed its hope . . . you too?

On this week's show:

New Rock Album: Annuals, *Count the Rings* (2010) . . . This delightful North Carolina indie-rock band has expanded their *Sweet Sister* EP (from March of this year) into a full-blown third album . . . by turns whimsical, oddly trippy, pensive, I find their hippie-ish sound beguiling & enjoy how album by album they continue to branch & leaf out wonderfully . . .

Classic Rock Album: Nick Drake, *Five Leaves Left* (1969) . . . British folk-rock singer Drake's debut album landed from seemingly nowhere in longhair 1969, & still sounds like it's arriving from both the past & the future . . . Drake's voice is the lead instrument of an excellent band, his lyrics the stuff of an intimate, sometimes secret poetry . . . all cumes to a 39 minute land of melancholy magic that one wishes to visit again & again . . .

Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Seven of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May . . .

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Golden Smog, the alt-country supergroup led by the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, & cuts from their excellent 2007 EP, *Blood on the Slacks* . . . there were moments here in Boston this week when autumn-tinged coolness slipped in for a few hours . . . soon more, & then more still!

On this week's show:

New Rock Album: Lower Dens, *Twin-Hand Movement* (2010) . . . Amazing debut album from this Baltimore quartet . . . band leader Jana Hunter was on the folk circuit for a decade when she decided to change course & form a rock band with some of her friends & tour mates . . . the result is a brooding, dreamy rock confection which rides 40 intensely pleasurable minutes along its own waves of reaction & reflection . . .

Classic Rock Album: Phil Ochs, *Rehearsals for Retirement* (1969) . . . In a year of amazing albums (including Nick Drake's *Five Leaves Left*, played on this show last week), Ochs' 1969 masterpiece stands as one of the best of them . . . a desperate, beautiful cri de coeur from a man who had fought the good fight for the betterment of society & was now left among his ruins, this album is both plain in its beauty & complex in its mysteries . . . summed like: how is it that an Ochs, or a Van Gogh, or a Cobain, can find in their darkest hours the materials & the will to make works of genius? And how do you thank a dead genius?

Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Seven of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May . . .

Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is the Smiths & some great cuts from their 1986 album *The Queen is Dead* . . . the summer is going & some souls wish it linger, & others bid it a quick adieu . . . or maybe it's all one season & naming four of them is a try, & a fail, to nature against itself as men, amongst themselves, daily, do . . .
