Pest Identification Challenge: Happy-Face-Butt Worm

Whilst digging up some soil that I intend to garden in very shortly, I came across this fellow:







Can anybody help me identify him?  I live in the south-east USA, if that helps.

That's fucking scary. Could be a winged insect. Look for some grub control.

It looks kind of like a beetle grub, but they usually have legs on the fron of the body.
