It seems that Google has it's fingers in everything online these days.  They, among others (Yahoo, AOL, etc.) are gathering detailed information about everyone's browsing habits.  In the age of homeland security and the patriot act, in the USA  this information could come back to haunt you.

Some things you can do:

1. Use Mozilla Firefox as a browser

2. Install the plug-in "customize google" and shut off cookies to google analytics as well as anonymise any other google cookies.

3. Install the plug-in for "tor" and download the vidalia bundle which includes tor and privoxy.  Tor allows for anonymous browsing and privoxy is a software proxy.

4.  If you do any P2P file sharing, download and install "peer guardian"

I use to use tor but it suddenly quit working for me. Went from great to nothing at all. I tried reinstalling it, deleting cookies, nothing worked.

As long as Sergey and Larry are in charge, you shouldn't need to fear.  they are geeks, yes, but info/privacy abusers, not.
