looks like an Echinocereus of some sort. guessing E. coccineus. take a look around the Echinocereus section of http://cactiguide.com/
it has lots of great pictures of many cacti.

The Desert / Re: Anyone know what this cactus is?

that's not a cactus, it's a succulent. it looks like some kind of haworthia, probably haworthia reinwardtii var chalumnensis. it's in the asphodeliaceae family. they throw up neat little white flowers on thin stalks.

i'm now in contact with a cactus conservation group out of texas. they have given me some ideas of where to start. i would still appreciate other people's input as well.

i'm in oklahoma. i'm looking into what is going on exactly with the cacti population around here. there are a few cacti species in the sw part of the state. i can do field research, lab work, or just write a 30 page paper.

let me introduce myself... i joined this forum awhile back but got a little sidetracked with school and what not. i love plants of all kinds but cacti have a special place in my heart.    :D  i'm in school for botany right now, only a year and a half left! well, i guess this wasn't much of an introduction but i have to run off to class now. in my flowering plants lab today we talk about cacti! i'm very excited!

laters...
