The Kitchen / wings
April 03, 2007, 10:54:05 PM
Yeah...the butter is the traditional way to go, but I omit it for the sake of reducing fat...not that wings are such a healthy food.  I could probably drink Frank's it so good, so it works on its own for me.

I didn't think about adding oil before baking.  I guess that will be good when I don't feel like grilling...but if anyone hasn't tried it I think the grill is better than deep frying because there's that BBQ flavor under the taste of the sauce.  I hate reheated wings, but i had some leftovers tonight and they weren't half bad.

The Kitchen / Hot Wings!
April 03, 2007, 01:48:59 AM
So as a hot wing enthusiest, I recently started trying to make my own.  Not wanting to deep fry them I tried baking and even pan frying them.  Both methods cause the wings to be clammy so that the sauce didn't stick...and they just tasted like crap.  I'm sure many have found this out already, but today I got around to grilling them.  Just grill plain wings til crispy and add Frank's red hot.  it's that simple.  They're better than 90% of the wings you'll get out at a bar or restaurant.  I'm so excited I thought I'd share.

The Desert / Hoodia rooting?

Stoney,

Did you try a sulfur dip to speed up callousing?  I had a similar problem with other cacti and I was told this would help by a few people.

The Desert / 45 Degree cut
February 25, 2007, 04:06:10 PM
I've had the same experience. It should be fine.

That type of cut will tend to induce pupping at the highest areole.  The only advantage of a straight cut is you may tend to get more pups from the top of a single cutting.

I've thought about coating the top of the flat cutting with wax to prevent the water from pooling. It's an unorthodox method, but it might work.

The Trade Winds / A few needed seeds...
February 18, 2007, 04:23:08 AM
I was hoping somebody here can help me with a trade. I'm looking for the following seeds/plants:

*Acorus Americanus (already have  A. calamus, looking specifically for the American variety)

*Pedicularis Species (especially Groenlandica, Canadensis)
*Tabermontanae Species (any)
*Trichocereus Macrogonus

I'll update this as I get what I need so if it's up I'm still interested.

Thanks.

All other trade offers always welcome too. I won't discriminate.

The Salvia Plane / FOX 5
February 16, 2007, 10:29:30 PM
Yeah about a week or two ago it was on FOX 5 news.  It was a warning about the new halllucinogenic herb that kids are turning to.  Luckily it was right at the end of the news and was so quick i doubt it made much of an impact.  I guess they didn't have time to get into the reefer madness pitch.  I've heard of it popping up on local news channels but this was the first time on a major news channel.

The Salvia Plane / House light
February 07, 2007, 03:35:37 PM
It's going by the natural light cycle, but I realize the regular house lights may have interrupted it a bit. Yet, new buds have formed under these conditions.  They just seem to stay that way.  I suppose like you said the best route is to put them under an artificial cylce.  I heard about 10 hours of light was good too.  I guess my new question is, once it has been interrupted, will it continue if I put it under these conditions or will new buds need to form and grow continuously into flowers?

Nice pics by the way.  Did you collect any seeds?

The Rain Forest / Lethal dose
February 04, 2007, 02:38:08 AM
well I looked it up and the LD 50 for nicotine is approx. 0.9mg/kg, which would mean you need more than a pinhead, but it's still a prety small amount.  Ironically, the same source says pigeons can tolerate 75mg/kg!

The Rain Forest / Nicotine carcinogenic??
February 04, 2007, 02:34:25 AM
I've actually thought about the idea of nicotine itself being a carcinogen before.  I don't believe nicotine is carcinogenic in its own right becuase that would make other nicotine-containing plants such as mucuna pruriens 9said to contain nicotine) and the nicotine patch carcinogens as well.  As far as I know, the patch doesn't come with a cancer warning label.  None of this is evidence, but it coincides with the research that Sachadelic mentions.

Regarding the toxicity of nicotine my father used to tell me that the amount of pure nicotine that would fit on a pinhead is enough to kill you.

The Rain Forest / Stevia germ
February 04, 2007, 02:18:11 AM
It's tough to germ from seed, so it is usually propogated by cuttings.  But I assume you are beyond that point and have seeds.

Here is some info on the soil requirements:
