Woman Convicted of Groping Screener

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A woman who was upset over being searched bodily at an airport was convicted Tuesday of assaulting a security screener by grabbing the federal officer's breasts.
A federal jury heard the case against retired teacher Phyllis Dintenfass, who also allegedly shoved the screener during the search at the Outagamie County Regional Airport in Appleton in September 2004.
Dintenfass, 62, faces up to a year in federal prison and $100,000 in fines. The judge set sentencing for Nov. 1.
On Monday, Transportation Security Administration screening supervisor Anita Gostisha testified that Dintenfass activated metal detectors at a checkpoint, and she heard Dintenfass say she thought the problem was bobby pins and barrettes in her hair.
Gostisha said she took the woman to another screening area, where she used a handheld wand. Gostisha said she was following protocol when she also performed a "limited pat-down search."
Gostisha said she was using the back of her hands to search the area underneath Dintenfass' breasts when the woman lashed out at her.
"She said `How would you like it if I did that to you?' and slammed me against the wall," Gostisha testified. "She came at me and grabbed my breasts and squeezed them."
Distenfass claimed she acted in self-defense.
"I said, 'What are you doing? No one's done that to me before,'" she said. "And she kept going ... for what felt like an interminably long time."
Dintenfass denied shoving Gostisha, but admitted putting her hands on the agent's breasts.
"I was mortified that I had done that," she said. "I was reacting to what felt like an absolute invasion of my body."
U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic said TSA officers perform a vital service and are entitled to protection from assault.

Shame on those 12 people--would have been a perfect time for jury-directed justice.
In the absence of witnesses (I have friends who have declined to go to a private screening area--"Let's just do this where everybody can see"), it looks like a wash to me: Hey, how come you can touch mine, and I can't touch yours? :)
And, of course, if a wand indicated the hair pins were setting off the detector, why was a pat-down necessary? Have we super secretly learned that 62 y.o. women who wear pins in their hair are highly likely to have C4 stuffed in their bras?
What sense does a protocol make that follows a wand check with a "limited" pat-down in this sort of case?
Here's a likely scenario: Rude and petty-power enjoying screener, anxious and offended passenger = 1 year and $100K?
Don't make faces at them, either. Or smile. Or even look directly into their eyes. Just stare at the floor and shuffle along.
Amen, space.
The last time we flew, they decided to do a random check on me wife. But then they realized their error and proclaimed that due to the wife and I having the other's ticket stub, they meant to do the random search on me, and then proceeded to give me the once over as well. It appeared to me like I was "randomly" targeted for a search come hell or high water.

" Just stare at the floor and shuffle along" Sure, why not? The protocol has already been set years ago. After all, that's how the people did it in Buchenwald, and Treblinka, and all the other little 'resettlement camps' Herr Adolph set up  --------------- LW, yessiree, senor has aso been the recipient of 'a randomized search procedure' that was blatantly anything but random.....========== Imagine Bin Laden sitting in a cave somewhere. He's connected to the net, and spends hours each day learning of the repression, the Patriot Act fiasco, and the other bits of freedom our benevolent leaders have stripped from us..... Shucks, 'ya can't help but figure he is clapping his hands with glee, and 'knows he has already won the fight against 'the Great Satan',,,,,,,, makes one wonder why our leaders can't see the manipulation by outside forces that result in our leaders tightening the screws on we 'da peeps, as being something to avoid at all costs..... I must surely have a PollyAnna streak a mile wide, because I just can't seem to grasp why our guvmit would let our country become a place of less freedom, and in effect hand over the victory against terrorism by default.................. senorsal
You never been interogated till you been grilled by the Israeli army. They run the security in and out of Israel, and they are good.
And as a man flying alone, I got a little extra scrutiny. The guy before me in line was carrying an Oud (arabic lute) and even though he looked not a bit middle eastern they totally shook him down, stuck their sniffer wand in every nook and crany.
yeah, home sweet home
what am i gonna do when i walk into a mall in sweet clean Toronto and no one's gonna radar my bag?
i'm gonna be a lost puppy looking for a favorite dish of chow
62 year old ladies always hide things under their breasts, especially bombs and boxcutters and cocaine.
I got a kick out of recently all cigarette lighters were banned from air travel. Supposidly due to a suspected terrorist striking a match and attempting to light his shoe (bomb). But you are still allowed to bring along matches. Doh.

shuffle, eyes down and move along...here's a funny one: last time i travelled out of seattle airport, i put the cash in my pocket in the basket for pocket stuff...this big security dude yelled at me: keep your cash in your pocket...i said i was trying to follow rules...he said those are the rules...i don't recall seeing any rules posted or hearing that rule ever...
shuffle, eyes down and move along...yah, that's what we have to do...more and more, pretty soon we'll be doing it alone in our homes, in our sleep, in our dreams, shuffle, eyes and move along...oh and keep your ass high for convenient kicking when the SS guards get a notion...and your purse open for when they need another coin...
shuffle, eyes down and move along...when people are sleeping in the streets, when women are getting broken, when children are getting brainwashed, when the earth is brown all over, when nobody has a name anymore because nobody fucking needs one or deserves one, just numbers, if that...
shuffle, eyes down and move along...it gets easier, really...
(believe that and you're lost)
