Title: Artemisia absinthium
Post by: fuzz on June 19, 2005, 06:12:18 AM
(//http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/w/wormwo37-s.jpg)

i have an absinthium question.
i got this plant which i bought at a  plants store, with the label "Artemisia absinthium " on it; this year is its second year of growth. the plant seems to grow quickly, and with no special care at all. it is a strong plant, with greyish, fuzzy like leaves, with a recognizable smell.

BUT. when i look at pics, or read info on the plant, it mentions little yellow flowers, which i never got on my plant. the leaves are the right ones, but i get no flowers. i left the plant last year, grow, until october or so. still no flowers.

WHY!!???? and, has anyone experienced with brewing or making something with this plant? are the flowers nescassary to get the chemical coumpounds needed for getting the plants effects?

thanx for any info.

I started to grow Artemisia absinthium for over 20 years ago and have had much success with it.

Some years I get flowers and some I dont depending on the following: First of all this plant shouldnt have much ferts and lot of sand in the soil. Give it to much nitrogen and it will grow a lot but usually want have time to flower before the winter. If it is gets to much water you will have the same problem. To little sun the same problem.

Hence it is important to plant it at a good position to start with. Think about the road sides there it usually resides. It has a lot of sun, little water, much sand in the earth and not much ferts.

thanx green2herman.
i had just put the plant in the dirt in the garden, and let it grow, ie, no ferts, or anything but what nature gave it. it had good sun, but no sand in dirt.
so, i will put some sand in the dirt next time i plant one :D  :P

Flowers not required for absinthe recipes... plenty of actives in the leaves. In fact, should you venture into making your own, you will probably want to add lots of other stuff to mask the flavour of the Wormwood. There's a variety that's been out awhile now, I believe called Powis Castle, or something like that, that some rave about...

I did find a way to kill A. absinthium.... the native clay-rocky soil here... my successful time with it was elsewhere and an even heavier clay soil natively, but I amended the beds it was in with as much potting soil as I could - not sand - and they did wonderfully for me in both full sun and part-shade...

My Artemisia absinthum flowers every year.
Plant it in full sun at exposed areas.
There´s no way that they shouldn´t flower at all.
But don´t overwater them.
