Title: calea problems
Post by: random on June 12, 2005, 10:31:57 PM
I decided to try out my dream herb plant the other night, and after letting the leaves dry out a bit, they all developed little white dots all over them.  I'm waiting to try it out, hoping it's still safe to brew

I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and what to do about it, will it cause calea's effect to stop?  A few weeks ago, small white bugs appeared in the soil, I thought I got rid of them all but could they be the problem?

This is the first I heard of that problem. There were no spots on the leaves but after drying, you had spots? How long did you dry them, how big are the spots? I'm growing calea but haven't harvested any yet.

yeah, the spots only appeared after drying them out, a few leaves would get dry and fall of the plant, but could be from the lack of sun we've been having lately, and the spots are very tiny, and in clusters of about fifteen or so

I'm almost positive it's the plant and not the drying, because the other plants I harvested at teh same time turned out fine.

Can you pick them off?  You might have scale or some similar type of insect pest.

No, you can't pick them off, I'll try to borrow the digital camera from work tomorrow and take a few pictures to post...if I can figure out how to

i would say its a disease.  if not to many of the leaves are infected pinch them off and pet the plant.  if too many are then i dont know.  picking them of would probly shock the plant.  sorry i really dont know anything.

peace and blessings

are the white bugs like white fleas in the soil that hop around?

they might be a form of sand aphid. i know i got em here, they eventualy turn yellow with black dots and crawl up on my plants and eat til they form wings or something. spray them with soapy water (try not to get ur plant it might burn it) they will fry in it.

they could be the problem, but it actualy sounds like mold to me too.

The problems gone now, but this description is right.  I ended up using a tobacco/water mixture and then soapy water two days later.
