Title: Voacanga Africana bearing fruit
Post by: Stonehenge on September 05, 2013, 04:50:00 PM
A few days ago i noticed something odd. On my v.a. trees there were hanging a couple new ornaments. They looked like small oranges. Here is a pic of them and one of the flowers. They have flowered before but this is the first time they set fruit. It may have been because both flowered at the same time.

The seed pods are showing signs of a seam going top to bottom so they no doubt plan to open clamshell style in a bit. I put some soft window screen around them to catch the seeds in case i miss the opening. I will have fresh fresh v.a. seed to trade soon. Fresh seed sprouts fast unlike the crap you order.

Did those guys ever pop? Do you have any pictures?

Looks a little like an avocado. Are the leaves milky?  They kind of look like they hold that milk blood.

Beautiful fruit!

I got seed from once back in the late 90's...which meant a handfull of hard dead seeds. (They had an unusual smell to them...)

None have popped yet which is kind of surprising. They still might.

Amazing plant...but I'm afraid one I'll have to admire from a distance as it's a bit large for my sunroom.  I was wondering if the flowers were fragrant though?

I didn't notice any fragrance but it probably has some.

I'm looking at the house in the background Stonehenge... and it looks familiar, although it has been over a decade so my mind may be playing with me... but if that is the house I think it is... you also have or had a variegated T. pachanoi at another location not far from that place that I grafted for you. I see you harvested the seeds from this one, can I ask at this late date if you grew any of them up for genetic diversities sake?

None of the v.a. seeds sprouted and this year no flowers set seed.

Wakinyan, i have a small monstrose that is struggling along.
