Title: Immediate Assistance Needed, DXM
Post by: Amomynous on May 04, 2005, 08:32:46 PM
Hey folks, kind of an off-color question...

I awoke normally today, but as the day progressed I found myself in more an more pain. A muscle spasm or pulled muscle in my neck has left me in quite a bit of pain.. I have a hard time moving my head from side to side, and driving is difficult, as you would imagine.

I've taken both aspirin and Advil, to absolutely no avail. So my question is this: I took a "recreation" DXM dose once, and while I didn't particularly enjoy the hangover, I was wondering: does say a high 1st, low 2nd plateau DXM dose have any analgesic qualities?  I could use a little relief for tonight... I would usually use kraton or kava, but I'm out...

TIA.

I have no idea on the effects of dxm.

Regardless, a hot tub, preferably with whirlpool jets, and a neck/ back massage by mrs amom should provide some relief.

I'm able to get some relief from cronic neck/upper back spasms by lying on my back and sort of doing sit ups with pressure to different points of me back/neck being applied by position of feet. But it took me years to really get the hang of self-adjustment.

Hope you manage to find some relief tonight, bro.

Yep, I'll be heading out to the hot tub shotly :) I'll ask Mrs. Amom, but she's probalby going to bed soon (our daughter is still into all-night-nursing, so she gets sleep whenever she can). I'll tell her Dr. Willow perscribed it.

Don't know about sit ups or any movement, though. That's problematical... I'm actually not prone to these kinds of things, whch is proablay why I'm such a wuss about them!

Where's Byron when you need him  :?: ;)

I dont know about DXM but i'd recommend going to the docs, maybe you have torn some muscle?  Or worse still would be spinal probs, best to get it check...

Thanks for the concern! But it's definitely something minor: I'm sure it's muscular, and not having really done anything strenuous, it's of the pulled muscle/muscle spasm variety.

Well, I tried the experiment last night (approximately 3mg/kg), with mixed results. On the positive side it did seem somewhat effective in, if not reducing, at least distancing me from the pain. The existence of the pain became a relatively minor thing. [In the interest of full disclosure I also spent a good long while in the hot tub, which may have also collaterally helped.]

On the down side... well, it's DXM. I feel a bit hung-over this morning (the so-called "afterglow" ;) ), there was a touch or nausea, and I think that -- ultimately -- I'm just not that fond of the experience. That's not to say that it doesn't have some interesting attributes, but it just doesn't seem worth it to me personally. The hang-over isn't quite as bad as the one other time I tried a high dose of DMX, but that's probably more of a masking effect (I have a cold, didn't sleep well, etc.,  so I'm not at the top of my form).

Overall, I can't recommned this for pain.

From my experience, any analgesic effect from DXM is minor, and I've guessed in the past that it's more "psychological" in nature, rather than pharmacological.  So, I'm inclined to think it was the hot tub that did it for you, but I could well be wrong.  What the hell do I know? :D

Re: DXM and analgesia--- I've found that low-to-moderate doses of DXM are quite synergestic with standard doses of opiods when used in concert for legitimate pain relief.

Too bad I'm not nearby, or I'd hypnotize you into thinking there was no pain!

Sorry to hear of the discomfort Amom...  While I should prolly not offer any medical advice, I can attest to the fact that 2 yrs I took 4 150mg tabs of tramadol for some pretty severe upper shoulder pain.  I had just finished my 2nd 16oz beer when my friend offered the Tramadol...  Within 20-30min, I felt fine.  No pain mild buzz.  No drug type hangover the next day............  senorsal

I think you're right: what relief I felt wasn't from a deadening of the pain; it was more a unconcerned attitude (psychological). The pain became interesting, but not bothersome.

This is definitely well documented -- I came across it may times in my web searches for analgesic effects. It would also appear that DXM can prevent the development of opiate tolerance.

Senor: if I would have had a pharm., I would have taken it, as opposed to eating a bottle of cough-gels :) I think Druid said he once had tramadol prescribed for back pain and found it effective.

Subjectively, I'm about 50% back to normal, in regards to pain. Now, if I could just shake the 'dex hangover ...
