*New Rock Album: The Head and the Heart, *The Head and the Heart* (2010) . . . This Seattle band comes out of the gate with a great indie rock record, kicks up the guitars and goes, but then there are fiddles and dogs barking, funny moments and those of weird dark pathos . . . even Coldplay-like moments of sweetness . . . hope these guys stay around for the long haul . . .
*Classic Rock Album: The Eagles, *One of These Nights* (1975) . . . Strange album, full of great hits like "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It to the Limit" but dig a little deeper and the experimental nature of the band emerges, most notably in a long instrumental some may know from the *Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe* BBC radio program . . . So enjoy the familiar songs & where they lead . . .
*Storybook Time: Chapter Twenty-Four of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .
*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Led Zeppelin & cuts from their 1975 massive opus, *Physical Graffiti* . . . There is snow drifting out the window, though this winter has been mostly snowless . . . still the winters are long here in all manner of ways, physical and metaphysical . . . it's nice to feel at home these days . . .

*Classic Rock Album: Tom Petty, *Wildflowers* (1994) . . . This was Petty's second "solo" album though most of the Heartbreakers were on it . . . yet there is to it a deeply personal feeling, songs of loss, promises broken, yearning for good feelings & better days . . . heard with attention to the lyrics, a melancholy picture reveals . . . and the music itself does the usual Petty thing, rocks hard & high & sweet & slow & deep & oh so well . . .

Read the news recently that this legendary New York City band is calling it quits, maybe for good . . . so revisited this most recent release and if it is their last, it's a high point to leave on . . . twisted songs of despair, anger, tenderness, lots of rock and roll roaring . . . maybe this time it's true, better to burn out (like this) than fade away . . .
*Classic Rock Album: Harry Nilsson, *Nilsson Schmilsson* (1971) . . . Saw a recent documentary on this singer-songwriter and decided to look into his records . . . this album is considered his creative and commercial peak . . . and it sounds like both, like an artist well-versed in his craft, on fire with inspiration, ranging around among romantic disputes and morning hangovers and weird situations of all kinds, and setting it all to the great sounds and words in his head . . .
