*New Rock Album: The Jayhawks, *Mockingbird Time* (2011) . . . Wow! the 'hawks are back, and co-founder Mark Olsen is returned (he'd left in '95) . . . the result is what I would call a transitional album from the trippy bluegress sounds of the three post-Olsen albums, through a harkening back to his years with the band, toward I think something else . . . the results this first time back show a band stretching out, trying things, even a bit of guitar soloing along the way . . . I like this progression, indeed call it a work-in-progress, and await further results to come . . .

*Classic Rock Album: Jefferson Airplane, *Bark* (1971) . . . This is the first of two late-period Jefferson Airplane albums, much maligned by critics . . . The facts, I believe, are these: singer Marty Balin and drummer Spencer Dryden had left the band, replaced by drummer Joey Covington and, most importantly, Papa John Creach . . . so the album lacks Balin's romantic ballads, but gains from the addition of Creech's ethereal fiddle . . . the band is also strengthened by the Hot Tuna side-project work of guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady . . . in short, this is a different Airplane, but not less good . . . heavier, but the tunes remain true . . .

*Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Nineteen of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Warm in the Wake, & cuts from their fine 2008 EP, *Speak Plainly* (& hoping they are cooking up new tunes for release soon) . . . now that the hurricane has passed through, and done its damaging deeds, the autumn is readying to take the stage for a long, lovely solo . . . bring her on!

*New Rock Album: Blitzen Trapper, *American Goldwing* (2011) . . . This is the third album by this Portland, Oregon band featured on this show . . . for all the talk of a laid back West Coast sound, the truth of the matter is more like this: great bands like BT walk into the studio with such a vibe, but are all business in making their records . . . BT makes some heady, big-hearted, funny, rocking music, they love what they do, they're really good at it, and listeners are the recipients of these gifts in song . . .

*Classic Rock Album: Grateful Dead, *Blues for Allah* (1975) . . . Some say the Dead were only at their best in concert . . . this album is among a number (including earlier releases *Workingman's Dead* and *American Beauty*) that belie this assertion, as the Dead again work their wild deep magic in studio confines . . . a great album in its harder, softer, and weirder moments, from a band that stands rightly alongside the great rock bands of all time, live or on vinyl . . .

*Storybook Time: Continuing Chapter Nineteen of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is the Brooklyn band Beach Fossils, and tracks from their beguilingly jangly 2011 EP, *What a Pleasure* . . . while autumn is still about a week away on the calendar, the air is cooling in preparation, the nights are chilling nicely, the trees are even now readying their costumes . . . beauty is a-borning already . . .

*New Rock Album: Wilco, *The Whole Love* (2011) . . . It's a never-know situation coming face-to-face with a new Wilco album . . . frontman Jeff Tweedy will try anything once, and their new album especially reflects that . . . I find it a challenging record to get a full hold on, but worth the effort, and there are some strong rocking songs that stand out immediately . . . holds up well against their previous work . . .

*Classic Rock Album: R.E.M., *Lifes Rich Pageant* (1986) . . . R.E.M. announced recently their break-up after 31 years together . . . they stand with The Beatles and Phish as one of my three all-time favorite rock bands . . . I started following R.E.M. during their late '80s college rock days, and into their days of mainstream success in the '90s, and their work as a trio over the past decade . . . I think they suffered in recent years from the loss of drummer Bill Berry to retirement . . . while still often making excellent music, including this year's *Collapse Into Now*, they seemed to flounder a little for direction . . . the album featured this week is one of their early ones, and legendary, showing them fearless and funny and deep and strange, just fucking wonderful . . .

*Storybook Time: Chapter Twenty of *The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, From Flower Power to Hippie Mafia: The Story of the LSD Counterculture* by Stewart Tendler & David May. . .

*Readings from *Labyrinthine* fixtion & *Many Musics* poems . . . & this week's featured artist is Phil Ochs, & cuts from his under-appreciated last album, *Greatest Hits*, from 1970 . . . finally into the autumn, and one can decide the turn in seasons can be a turn of luck or will too . . . push a little harder, push again, and again, see what reveals . . .
