Post by: JRL on February 28, 2011, 12:06:58 AM
Anyone see Genghis Blues? it's the story of SF blind bluesman Paul Pena who learns Tuvan throat singing and becomes one of the best in the world, winning the big throatism competition in Tuva

Didn't see the movie, but the group in it -- Huun-Hurr-Tu -- gave a performance about a year ago at the college in my town. Great stuff! Orphan's Lament is always in rotation in my MP3 player.

That's a good story. The guy sure seems to be of their spirit.

Who would have figured? The real deep delta source of what we call blues goes deep, reminds me of much world music.

Another Paul Pena tidbit: I never could stand Steve Miller's Big Old Jet Airliner( don't really dig Steve, skilled cat who succumbs to cheesy commercialism) put Paul wrote that song and his version is totally soulful. He did live off the royalties and airplay money from that one tune.
