Title: Dr. Gonzo vs Barnes & Noble
Post by: senorsalvia on February 01, 2010, 11:07:23 AM
Well, here's one 'fer the annals..  Lately 'ole Sal has been sort of depressed, or at least not as mentally chipper as he would like...  Call it seasonal  affective disorder, normal clinical depression, cognizant awareness of the state of the world in general, whatever.   Then, to top things off, I've been having a hard time lately getting acess to the net and this fine abode here..  A couple of times last week, I tried to visit here and only got that insipid 'blonde babe'.  I tell 'ya peeps, it was putting me in a tizzy.  I didn't know if the tribe had decided to go somewhere else in cyberspace and I had missed discussion on such an issue..  I wondered; If that were the case, where could 'ya be...  So,  senor was a bit stressed....  Truth be told, you peeps are near and dear to my heart, and all that mushy kind of stuff..  Anyway, whilst flailing around in a fog, I decided to seek out the bookstore to healp with maintaining some sort of psychological equilibrium...  I happened to pick up an old reprint of Hunter S. Thompsons' Gonzo Papers....  Yep, if'n any of you have read his stuff, you know he's full of vitriol, vinegar and rollicking good times....  So there I am, sitting in a chair and 'ole Doc Gonzo had me bustin' out laughing time and again..  Hell, I was grinning, wiping tears away, slapping my knee, and nodding in the affirmative like a certifiable loon....  Guess I annoyed some of the folks 'cuz I was having such a good time;  because the management asked me to please vacate the store as I was not conduting myself with proper decorum    -----     Guess there goes my rather tenous grip on a last ditch effort to maintain 'normallcy'....  Glad to see the site back...  Hell, if'n you guys weren't here, who knows what state my fragile concioussness would  deteriorate into........   :smoke:3 ----------

Heh!  I get thrown out of places sometimes, too.   Last time I was in a sports bar I got choked and thrown out by a bouncer with a mohawk; and just a few hours ago I almost got 'profiled' as some sort of wierd stalker, and barred from boarding a train in Chicago.  Not much to do about it but laugh, eh, senor?

No exclusion from the library, and actually no expulsion from Barnes and Noble exactly.  They merely asked that  (and I quote)  'please try to mainain the proper respectful quietude while enjoying the store'....  Ha, 'Ya know what was even more funny??  As I stepped out of the store and lit up a smoke, some citizen came by and asked where the  20 selection movie theatre was located...  I told him it was directly behind the mall and indicated same with a thumb jerk over my shoulder.  He then asked what side of the mall it was on...  Well, at that point, still reeling from Dr. Gonzo;  I smirked and replied " yo man, it's not that hard, DIRECTLY BEHIND WHERE I AM STANDIN"  he gave me a sheepish nod and drove away    Jeez, maybe I'll have to take up reading the collected works of Norman Vincent Peale or something in order to 'pass' eh????   Gettin' bounced by a dude with a mohawk...  Gotta love the ebb and flow of the satus quo eh?? -------- Which reminds me.  I got refused a seat on an Amtrak once because they said I was drunk.  Yeah, they were correct.  When I asked them what difference that made, seeing as how they had a club car onboard, they shrugged and said 'welcome to Amtrack sir, have a nice journey.....

strange how laughing out loud, finding something incredibly funny is considered an anti-social act. (or should i say an indication of a lack of decorum).

right.
right up there with nursing a baby or meditating in public.

glad we've got spf - home sweet home.

I actually used to be a bouncer myself believe it or not..... in the roughest (and oldest) bar in boise called the cactus.... right out of highschool I was and full of myself.  I hated it..... was much more fun behind the bar serving the drinks instead of picking up the broken teeth and mopping up the blood(which ironically, I still do for a living.)  I quickly found that my rather large size meant nothing if it didn't impress people from the start...... and everybody knows theirs nothing more dangerous than a pissed off short guy.  And since I hate violence so much, I quickly figure out it's hard to hit a guy who's smiling at you and a little subterfuge and misdirection goes along way to diffuse a reactive situation..... it's served me well ever since.  Their such blunt instruments.  Everybody always expecting the re-action and escalation of impending events.  ()

Keap up the spirits Senor.

Just finished Hunter's scaithing report on the hells angels for the umteenth time..... Loved it!

Yep,  I just read Hunters Hells Angels within the last week as well.  Shucks, it's prolly been at least 20yrs since I perused those pages...  Ya know, with the passage of time, I was a bit taken by the even-handedness with which he viewed the boys of the iron steeds...  In my recollections, I remember feeling that the boys were getting a bit of the 'ole short shrift / backhanded smirk..  Not exactly true as per my newest rereading..  Dang it, I miss that Gonzo guy....

I just reread it too. A bit quaint don't you think?

Have you guys seen the new crop of HA prospects? Are they gearing up for gang wars?

Theirs a new outlaw biker gang series on tv called Sons of Anarchy, that really glorifies the 1 percenter lifestyle, I imagine that might have something to do with it.  Monkey see, monkey do.

I grew up with a few 1%'ers. Most I still call friends. (Those still alive.) However, I learned early on to keep my distance from a couple that just weren't right in the head. Kinda like mad dogs except for the fact that mad dogs are easier to deal with, imo. SO I'd say that in my experience, about 10% of the 1%'ers posed a threat to those in the group, outside the group or unassociated.  The rest were pretty straight up peeps.

On the other hand, I also learned to keep a healthy distance from outlaws that I didn't know. At least until a proper introduction could be made by a mutual friend. Even then, the prospect of meeting up with one of those 1/10th of 1%'ers should be enough to keep a person on their toes when partying with bikers.

I ain't seen the new biker program as of yet. Wtf are them prospective outlaws doing watching the boob tube, anyway?  :cool2

Speaking of outlaws, 1% peeps, and the like..  Around 20 yrs ago, I found myself without a significant other, a pile of money in the bank, and a really disaffected outlook on life in general.  I ended up buying a big 'ole chopper, a Sporty, and a restored Triumph and proceeded to 'do up the biker thing'..  In alot of ways it was mostly akin to any other niche grouping, in that we that hung together, road from one watering hole to another, and generally considered ourselves pretty much social outcasts, ne'er do wells, and carried a somewhat arrogant superior smugness.  I noticed that all the riders constantly dissed the general social order, but at the same time, all the guys had good jobs, middle class abodes, even attended stuff like PTA meetings (albeit leather clad)..  I will say that it was my impression that bikers and their ladies certainly seemed  to have some high achieving very well adjusted kids...  As far as those 1 tenth of 1% psychos:  Yep, noticed a few of them sprinkled amongst the crowd..  They seemed to exude a certain vibe that put me into a wary alert mode, yet they were, for the most part, easy enough to keep a distance from... My riding bros used to get on me because I refused to get any tatoos...  When asked to justify my position I'd merely tell 'em I never had seen any skin art that I could so totally identify with that I'd commit to in on a permanent basis....  Used to rag them that I was gonna buy a bright purple Ninja 250 and get a one-piece purple leather road race suit, with matching full face helmet; told 'em I'd go on runs with them like that :P   Told them the Ninja would outrun 90% of their machines.  Which for the most part was true....  Even though I really enjoyed my bike times I really did get tired of the ego/bravado posturing........

I spent a lot of time amongst the bikers when I was in the Beer Dawgs. We played some of the big runs and tons of little ones and I found it just as Senor describes it. "The Rugged Individual" was indistinguishable from all his brothers.
