Title: Hypothetical stuff regarding anticancer
Post by: jokergrin on September 04, 2009, 09:48:37 AM
So I got off on a tangent here at work (as often happens) and started reading about chemotherapy drugs.  There are many that are made from plant glycosides.  Three in particular that I'm thinking of are catharanthus (Vinca vine), podophyllotoxins from the May Apple, and Taxol from the Yew Tree.
My thought was...would a healthy person benefit from taking small doses of any of the above whole plants (not the drugs themselves obviously)?  The reason being - these drugs seem to stop cell division - thereby shrinking a tumor.  What if a person had a precancerous cell..or maybe a group of, say 10 or even 100 cells (still microscopic)?  There would be no way of knowing, but if one were to eat a yew berry or a may apple every now and then...would it be possible that these micro amounts of glycosides kill off (inhibit) a micro-tumor before it ever became a problem?

Again, these are just my theories.  I welcome any thoughts...

Steve

can't answer. don't know, but it has been shown that cancer cells cannot live in the presence of lemon grass. Drinking the tea is perfectly safe and delicious.
So, while we're waiting for the answer to your interesting question, i'd suggest putting on a pot of tea.

My parents both have rare lung cancers and they have been treated alopathically as well as seeking holistic help on there own. They buy HUGE quantities of lemon grass.

BTW- my stepfather is a mesothelioma survivor for almost 5 years, its usually terminal in 8-12 months.

Amazing, jrl. Strong will, i'm sure, is a huge factor in withstanding x-treme bodily stress.
May your family live long and comfortably.

G (my partner) has been reading voraciously about nutritional supplements - anti-oxidants like CoEnzyme Q10 and grape seed extract. All these are powerful body strengtheners.
Some folks on the kibbutz made wine and G happily took all the leftover mash to sift out the grape seeds. He now eats them with all his meals.
The dude's a fucking generator of energy. He's always been high-charged, but now it's phenomenal.

For those in search of natural plug-ins, i'd say that anti-oxidants are a safe start.

Yea, antioxidants are excellent!  CoQ10 can be *expensive*!! - but probably worth every penny...
JRL - I, too, wish your family all the best.

Short answer to pre-emptive mini-chemo idea is no it is not likely good. You would be doing more harm to your other fast dividing cells, such as hair, stomach mucosa, brain cells (there seems to be a good level of neurogenesis involved in short term memory especially), White cells etc. This is provided that the un-modified plant extract has the same effect as the modified chems used in chemotherapy. You would also be increasing the risk of developing leukemia. So my question is: Is it worth the increased risk that would be associated with any preemptive mini-chemo? Just thought I would give the counter argument as food for thought.

Just keep up on your leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, nuts, supplemental herbs and healthy oils. Compounds in broccoli, watercress, garlic, blueberries, and many many many other plant foods have been found to inhibit tumor cell growth and promote normal cellular functions. Also be sure to get those immune-boosting herbs like Dandelion Root, Astragalus, Echinacea.

Oh, and do not forget to get adequate levels of Vitamin D: it is one of the most powerful anti-cancer medicines on the planet!
