Title: Nutmeg / Virola ?'s
Post by: Zaka on January 26, 2009, 06:10:20 AM
Irie All,
So I was wondering????Nutmeg and Virola (megs) are so similar would they have other similarities.
#1 Since Nutmeg is a known hallucinogen, what is it 2/3 nuts or something. Could this also be true of the Virola nut......??(Hummm grate a few up in some cocoa tea instead of the nutmeg)
#2 Virola bark is used as a aya ingredient. Would the bark from the Nutmeg be also a potential aya ingredient.
#3 How about Nutmeg rootbark, is it active?
#4 Could one be grafted to another?
#5 Slightly different subject; Could E.C. be grafted to a coffee tree?

I'd like to hear what folks rekkon on this one.
I have a partner going up in the Rain forest on tuesday collecting Banja (wild yam). I've asked him to collect some nutmeg bark and roots, for further investigation

Respect

Irie,
I was looking through a book "Trees of Trinidad & Tobago" by R.C. Marshall....published 1934...in the book which is mainly concerned with timber trade trees. Two trees are listed under MYRISTICACEAE, one M. fragrans (Nutmeg) & Myristica surinamensis....So it would seem that this wild nutmeg as it is described is now called Viola Surinamensis.

So I driving down the road and I see that the electricity maintenance fella have trimmed up a nutmeg tree..
So I grab a bunch of handy sized logs and throw them in the back of the jeep;.[attachment=2:29ni11wc]100_1917.jpg[/attachment:29ni11wc]
As I was tooling it up I noticed sap rising up.

I prepared it the same way we make cinnamon.

So now what to do with the more than 2 kg of this bark?

Irie,
So got round to do a basic water extraction..chopped half pound of the bark up fine and boiled, strained & reduced.
The sticky mess was then bubbled off on a hot plate.....after cutting away from the burnt stuff and rolled....this nice hard lump was the result...
