Oh my God, I feel so sorry for this dude...
Chris Buckley is the son of famous hard-right republican William F. Buckley, who founded the National Review magazine (arguably the most famous conservative periodical in print). In a web blog, he offered a conservative viewpoint of the current McCain campaign and used it to show support (and endorsement) for Obama. Complaints hit the National Review at a ratio of 700 to 1 all in favor of firing Buckley (the SON of the founder of the magazine).
Politely, Buckley offered his resignation as a means to prevent any further scandal. As of October 2008, he no longer works for the magazine his own father created.
I read through the blog he wrote and I must admit it is very moving and he seems to agree with many of the arguments I have made regarding the waning strength of McCain's character in light of the current campaign he is running.
"Sorry Dad, I'm voting for Obama" by Chris Buckley (//http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2008-10-10/the-conservative-case-for-obama/)
"John McCain has changed. He said, famously, "We came to Washington to change it, and Washington changed us." This campaign has changed John McCain. It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget "by the end of my first term." Who, really, believes that? Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis. His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?
All this is genuinely saddening, and for the country is perhaps even tragic, for America ought, really, to be governed by men like John McCain-who have spent their entire lives in its service, even willing to give the last full measure of their devotion to it. If he goes out losing ugly, it will be beyond tragic, graffiti on a marble bust.
Obama has in him the potential to be a good, perhaps even great leader. He is, it seems clear enough, what the historical moment seems to be calling for. So, I wish him all the best. We are all in this together. Necessity is the mother of bipartisanship. And so, for the first time in my life, I'll be pulling the Democratic lever in November."
My heart goes out to you Mr. Buckley. That must have hurt.
P.S. - Chris Buckley is also the writer of the brilliant satire "Thank You for Smoking" which was eventually made into a wonderful film.
He seemed very much at ease on Daily Show while shilling his new book, a novel containing a character eerily like Mrs. Palin (such prescience).
A polished wit...

That's a great movie!
At least WFB was a true conservative who believed in less gubmit intrusion in the lives of we the people. I applaud him for his stance on legalizing marijuana. However, his attempt to skirt US law by sailing into international waters before lighting up was a sham, imo. SOmeone still had to cart the weed from land to international waters and that's just as big a crime as smoking da kind, imo.
So Chris Buckley has been liberated. I'm sorry he lost his father, but he has already said in interview that the death of his father has liberated him concerning what he feels he can write.

Dear Senator McCain,
The son of the founder of the National Review took a bullet for you. He wrote you an eloquent love letter, dedicated to his undying respect for you, but gravely saddened with how much you have CHANGED... I sincerely hope you took notice.
Love,
The true conservative party
P.S. - Dump that moose-killing, wolf huntin, bible thumping, beer chugging, fear mongering, atrocity of a woman. Dump her now.
I surely don't have anything of importance to add to this thread, but I must say it's been excellent reading..."such prescience"..Ha Ha.... Great stuff peeps......
