Title: nicking hbwr seeds?
Post by: Just Me on July 09, 2008, 05:06:40 AM
how deep do i nick?

i nicked one the other day as a tester, and soaked it roughly 24hrs and the result was no swelling.

i then stuck it into my medium, and it swelled there drastically.

within the next 24 hours, the seed cracked thru the middle(if you can imagine how you crack an egg) but since then there has been no sign of growth.

this was about 2-3 days ago now.

any suggestions or tips on germination and propagation of hbwr?

btw, i live in hawaii, it should be simple to grow, and have a hothouse for all my seedlings and starts

It sounds like you did well. You just need to penetrate the outer covering. If you see a different color, you have probably gone far enough. It can take more than 24 hours to swell even with nicking.

that seed that was a tester went rotten on me.

it cracked in the center, and did nothing after that.

should i attempt it again and hope for a better outcome, or does anyone know a better technique

Try, try, try again. One seed does not tell the story.

try sand paper!
Also distilled or spring might be better than tap!

I'm glad to hear it, Just Me. Are you planning to grow them outdoors or keep them inside during the winter?
