Title: RIP - Provider of laughter, Defender of rights
Post by: caulfield on June 23, 2008, 12:16:21 PM
As of ~6PM Sunday, comedian George Carlin is no longer with us.

Like Lenny Bruce before him, he skillfully utilized laughter as a weapon against the oppressive hypocrisies of society.

Rest in peace sir.

I did not know that. He was a good one, one of the only comedians I ever saw in person. All the icons are dropping like flies.

PS. Whats up Caul?? Don't be a stranger.

I miss Rodney Dangerfield. To me, he was one of the greats. Then there is George Burns who it looked like would go on forever until he fell and broke his hip. When he saw he could never perform again, he gave up and died. Performing was what kept him alive. Bob Hope passed on a few years ago. I saw him in person many years back. He always donated his time to help the troops.

The old funny men are leaving us or have left. Is it my imagination or are the new ones kind of foul mouthed? I don't watch tv any more so I may have missed out on the new tallent.

I love the old comics too. Rodney I really love.

I think part of the difference now is that we have a culture of instant success, and for that the best thing to be is attention grabbing. Guys like Bob Hope( not that he didn't play blue a lot but was subtle) spent years in vaudville learning their craft.

My favorite Rodney: I came home last night and a guy was jogging down my street nude. I asked him how come he was doing it and he said "because you came home"

Now that is funny. It's sexy but not dirty, IMO. There is a difference. Too many of today's comics language is all f- this and f- that. If they are black, they say nigga a lot. Plus all the toilet humor, some of which may be good but most isn't

Rodney was a capable actor too. He had some awful roles when he started out but he pulled it off. For example, a 50 yo guy going back to school and trying to be cool. He earned respect.

Hehe, funny that you bring up this argument because the two comics I mentioned above, George Carlin and Lenny Bruce were both arrested for violating obscenity laws with their notoriously foul-mouthed and vulgar routines.

Yep, sad to see another of the "special / comedians of note" go... Matter 'o fact, over the last 4-5 yrs, as I've aged, people tell have teold me I look like Carlin....  I happerned to mention that yesterday to a lady friiend I did some yard work for, then lo and behols, I see her today and she gives me this sad news....  Kinda Kosmic.......  I'll miss Mr. Carlin quite alot; always thought he was really original and loved his humanity and political edge....

I'm not uptight about language, per se. It's just that so many comics seem to think that an unfunny story or dumb joke becomes funny if some cussin' is thrown in. Carlin did have talent. Rodney told some dirty jokes too but he had talent as well.

One joke attributed to Bob Hope was that when he arrived for one of his uso tours, they told him his quarters which were a room right next to the women's barracks had a hole in the wall which would allow someone to look through. They said they would get it fixed. Bob is supposed to have quipped "What the heck, let 'em look"

Speaking of old comics, Danny Thomas has not been heard of in a long time. He use to star in "Make room for daddy" and a few other things. Anyone remember Red Skelton? I think both those guys are still alive but maybe not performing.

Red passed a way fairly recently, I'm not sure about Danny.

Another famous Bob Hope one liner: "Meet me in front the pawnshop and kiss me under the balls"
