Title: Pleasant Surprises
Post by: laughingwillow on May 27, 2008, 07:22:53 PM
Some years back we caught a Farm Aid gig in L'Ames Ioway. One of the evening performers was Brian Adams. I'm not a BA fan, particularly, and wasn't expecting much. But I remember being blown away by the musical presence created, including their use of stage lights for some reason.

Any other pleasant experiences not expected out of the gate?

Oh yeah, Sha-Na-Na put on a pretty good show back in da day. hehe No foolin'.

Some years ago I happened upon a free ticket from a friend to see the Cure. I don't think of them as rockers, but boy, they did rock! I'd always liked them well enough, but after that show I realized how really good musicians they are!

On the first Furthur festival, Los Lobos ,who I have always loved, rocked way harder than I knew from their studio records. They opened their set with Bertha, and with the pain of garcia's passing still an open sore, I just melted into a puddle of tears, then they ripped into Politician like it was still 1969, tore the roof off the mothersucker. They were the high point of the show, though Bruce Hornsby was great. Rat Dog and Mickey harts band not so much. We got dosed really heavily from spray bottles, TJ got hit in the face twice straight on., I heard someone kicked down a gram of acid to make sure everyone had a good time, first time out without Garcia.

Years ago, I had just gotten back to my old hometown and reconected with 'da peeps .  They were all going to go see Bob Seeger and had an extra ticket / demanded I attend....  I went, expecting to have nothing more than a moderately decent time...  Surprise, surprise... The bands sound fidelity was amazing considering the venue {St.Louis Mo-Keil Auditorium}, and 'ole Bob just had a vibe and presence that I was really taken by...Much cooler show than I would have thought..........   sidenote:::  Every time I see Santana I leave thinking I've recieve a divine sonic blessing and a rarified musical moment.... Hmmmm, funny how 'ole Carlos so consistently cranks out ""rare moments"" :)

LOL Ol' Bob Seeger, eh?

Never paid him much mind until the first night I got chased out of a Dead show by the electric heebie-jeebies. (I was convinced the scene was run by the devil. I figured the friends I left to fend for their own rides were history.) And as I attempted to break free of that Oakland orbit I turned the radio onto KFOG and heard Mick and the Boys belting out Sympathy for the Devil. Then next up was Bob Seeger singing "You Can Come Back Baby, but Rock and Roll Never Forgets." Fuck, I don't know about Rock and Roll, but I sure won't forget THAT night!

Oh, man. This thread just got too deep too fast. What a pleasant surprise......

To some, ignorance is the enemy. And as "satan" means enemy, that means satan IS ignorance. For example, much wickedness has come from the ignorant notion that there is more than one race of human, imo. Ignorance of active sacrament and the ramifications is another example.

However, in a parallel universe inhabited by many right-wing evangelical christian peeps, satan is something all together different. Satan invented rock and roll for the moral degradation of this once great nation's 'ute. Satan tempts us to do drugs; invites us to eat from the tree of knowledge of Good and E-vile....

So, by one camp's definitions above, eating drugs and catching rock and roll shows is prolly walking with satan in an intimate fashion. Hand in hand, if you will.

"Communing with god," say the freaks. "Love and forgiveness rule."

The first night toostoned consumed an active sacrament at a dead family event, the devil chased him from red rocks in the middle of the show. The same night, I became convinced that Willy Nelson was the devil. Overheard the folks behind me say that willy was the shit and really should have been the headliner that night and I knew right then that if true, had to make Willy the devil himself, laying back all cool and kind with ego in check. What a wily enemy..... Doh! Why didn't I figure that out myself? (Six or seven dried grams of aborts just seemed to put a person in that frame of mind. Christ, I would have prolly left too, if'n only my legs would have worked.

Then when the next set of shows came around and toostoned was ready to hop back on that bicycle, I really considered that a pleasant surprise....

You can come back, baby,
rock and roll never forgets.....

Willie Nelson eh???  Once, when residing in that cultural hellhole known as the capitol city of Illinois, I heard that Willie was set to play an outdoor gig at the State Fairgraounds....  Tickets were available and cheap, so I bought 4 that day...  After work, I went back to the house and told my significant other that we'd be attending a Willie jam that weekend...  Since we were basically rockers, it did not surprise me to be questioned as to why I had bothered to get the tickets....  {{{   Back Story   }}}   After this gal and I had lived together for many months / told each other all our secret stuff / gotten to truly relate etc. there came a time when she asked me if I'd ever had a fantasy about some babe, some karmic diva that I would ever leave her for, if ever I was given the oppurtunity....  I answered her truthfully, and with a quickness!!!  I told her that she no longer had to worry cuz the only gal I'd leave her for was many years dead, though not forgotten...  She pressed me  """Hon, who's the girl of your past dream????"""    I told her it was none other than Janis Joplin!!!   She told me I was crazy, Janis screamed, couln't sing,  blah blah....   The night of the Willie concert,:   We had really decent seats.  Willie seemed to genuinely enjoy the venue and the crowd.  The band was tight..  It was a really good show....After the concert; back at the house and with Hoffmans' Bicycle Wheels beginning to run down, my lady and I retired to the bedroom....  As we settled uunderneath the covers, my lady turned to me with an absolutely devious and impish look upon her face....  I asked her "waaaassuup babe??"   She smiled derisively and grinned hugely.  "Well, baby" she said...  ""You can have your Janis, just remember that if I ever get a shot at Willie, you, my darling, are history""

LOL I've seen Junior a couple/few times and I don't remember that one. Shucks, the last time we saw him was less than a year ago. I was lucky not to get thrown in jail the first time I caught his act. It was at a music festival we attended every year. Nobody told me half the dude's fans were members of the highway patrol....
