Title: Animal Companions
Post by: Syd on May 26, 2008, 08:02:49 PM
Just taking a census of all the spiritplant critters out there.

First three are dogs; Prince a maltese he is 13, Rikku a boxer/pit she is 7 and Becca a doberman is 3.

Who were/are your companions?

How about a little bunny rabbit? They are very friendly, good natured and easy to take care of.

I grew up working for one of the largest pet wholesalers/retailers in the midwest. (Started when I was ten.) Quatimundi, kinkajoos, aligators, squirrel monkeys, boas, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, birds and tropical fishes of every stripe and hue were part of my daily "grind" from the time I can remember.

My mom was raising german shepherds when I was born. Then she went to Norwegian Elk Hounds and later Maltese. I helped birth my first litter of Elk Hounds when I was around six.  I remember having guppy and molly babies around that time, too. (Couldn't believe the adult fish would eat the babies!)

The wife and I now run a commune for wayward cats. Five kitties currently patrol our little wildlife sanctuary in the burbs. Hawks hunt our feeders every winter, the cats are at the top of the food chain the rest of the year..

Five is too many for me, but after we took in a young stray last fall and she then proceeded to have six kittens while laying next to me in our bed. The wife insisted we keep the two runts and then there were five.....

We also have an antique bird cage, with open door, displayed in the living room. But you see, I can't bring myself to keep animals caged anymore. And that's why cats prolly work for me. Our kitties pretty much come and go as they please. They are more parts of the family than pets.

We just got a young cat and a cocker spaniel, from a shelter of course. The cocker, Shelby, was a puppy-mill dog and so she is a little skiddish but lately she is really coming out of her shell.
She absolutely loves going for walks and exploring anywhere she can. I get the feeling she never went out for walks when she was younger....
Normally I am a cat person but, who can resist this face?

She also likes to play with the cat... they love chasing each other around the house. One will chase the other and then they stop and reverse roles, it's quite fun to watch   :D

....I remember when our shop got in an electric eel. It was placed in a tank with a large Oscar upon arrival. But the two clashed and I showed up to work one day and found the electric eel isolated in a large tank with little water while having its wounds medicated. I'd heard a person could get shocked by an electric eel and then heard from friends that you had to touch the head and tail at the same time to get a shock. So I made sure no one was looking and then just touched it with one finger right in the middle of its body and the thing shocked the shit out of me.

Nice puppy pics, btw.

Way to go Kemp...  Every dog I ever owned was a rescue find, and I gotta say that such critters ivariably end up being the coolest most rewarding friends one could hope for....  As far as 'that face' ...  Take a close look at the pic on the right...  Note the look of searching scrutiny...  Yep, maybe the pup had been neglected...  Seems to senor; by that look, that our man Kemp is still on probationary status  ....  Here's hoping you make the cut and our canine lets you hang out :)

We get all our dogs from the pound and our cats were either foundlings or "gifts" from people that didn't want them any longer.

To find dogs we usually walk up and down the cages and saying "sit". any dog that knows that is a good candidate, already socialized. We have had three womderful dogs in a row, 2 still with us. We had to put our beloved Dorothy down a couple years ago, the last thing the dear girl did was look up to see why everyone was crying and if she could help. She was a pit/dal.

Chester is my boy, a sharpae(sp?") shepard mix. He is named after Santana's organ player, Chester Thompson. Our little guy is Bosco, a chihuahua/dachsund, best we can tell. He talks like Scoobie Doo, says "I love you" when we come home and I taught him to spin like a top.

We love our dogs dearly, they are true family members.

I've never had a dog as an adult.

If we lived in the country, it would be a different story. I'd like to have a bird dog  for chasing pheasants and a herding breed to guard/herd a flock of ducks and geese and maybe chickens. I think it would be neat to teach a dog to do their daily chores and earn their keep. Shucks, some of these breeds, you might be facilitating more than teaching.

Fairuza, my cat. She's cute and friendly and loves to knock over glasses full of water and meow at closed doors and generally piss me off when she isn't being super-lovable.

Great to see you post jiku.

A baby parrot, eh? Let me know how that goes with the cats. I've always wondered but, well, you know we grew up watching sylvester and tweety and I'm not sure I trust our puddy-tats......

If raised correctly, I've seen great friendships form between the two species.

Our cats have never gone after our loud mouth cockatiel, but  wouldn't leave them alone together.

We have three cats, so it is a concern but they all have their front claws taken out. I have mixed feelings about that now, but at the time, I didn't really have a choice. We definitely plan on keeping them apart until they get to know each other, and even then, not leaving them alone together.

I've seen big birds keep cats at bay, but I'd be leery with or without claws.

My favorite 'big birds' are the blue & gold and the scarlet macaw. Magnificent creatures!

Hello I am new here.  This is my first post.

I love animals and at this moment I have 5 dogs and a turtle.

Why do I have 5 dogs?  Because I don't have 6. :)

Seriously I have a beagle, 1 black pug, and 2 fawn pugs.  I also foster pugs until they can be adopted.  I just received a new foster pug on Sunday.  Tawny... she is fawn, 8 years old and has lived her entire life inside a wire cage in a puppy mill.

The pads on her feet are swollen, she is afraid of eveything, since it all new to her.  The poor baby is in constant fear.  She is especially afraid of doors and thresholds.

If you aren't familar with puppy mills do a search on you tube.  The have some great videos there, most were done undercover.

Please don't ever buy a puppy from a pet store... they all come from puppy mills via Hunte.

It's nice to be here... look forward to getting to know you folks.

Jeez....  So sorry to hear about Tawny's previous life....  Give her a hug and a scratch behind the ears for me....  It's a nice feeling just to know she's been rescued from on of those damned  " Pet Auschwitz Places"...

I share my life with two allies of the canine persuasion. Both of them are about 3 1/2 years old. First up is Diesel. He's pure Sibe, all the way. He's the best! Don't know what I'd do without him.
(//http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/9839/l770b8cb842988796b03e33bl3.jpg)     (//http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6145/l29922cb4ae6c9aa01d2e9fdq2.jpg)

And this is Karma. She's a horrible vicious pit-bull! This land-shark had a very crazy life before I finally managed to grab her up. She's been with me for a year-and-a-half now. But before that her life was a rollercoaster. Sometimes homeless, sometimes ownerless... living in cars, meth-houses or wherever. She's been stolen from more people than I can count, just about everyone claimed her as their own at least once or twice. I've seen serious fights break out over her. She was abused when she was really young I'm sure, she's still a little hand-shy at times (if you move to quickly to pet her head, she winces like she's expecting to get clobbered   ) and I've never hit her. Well, aside from a few swats on the rear when appropriate,  which is pretty rare. Anyways, long story short.. I finally got my hands on her when her last "owner" got arrested for shoplifting and ended up having a bag of dope on her. Since she also had my car at the time I was able to pick them both up at the store. She was in bad shape. But, thanks to a few angels for sure, two months and a $1500+ vet bill later (toss in a surgery as well) she was back up to par health-wise. Now she's in perfect health and happy as can be. Her only dreams and aspirations seem to be to smother every living thing she sees with pit-bull love, that and take up the whole bed when I'm trying to sleep. There's not a negative, aggressive bone in her body. Considering the first year-and-a-half of her life I'd say that's pretty incredible.
