Title: Shortening url's
Post by: Stonehenge on July 06, 2007, 05:04:03 PM
There is a feature in which long urls are shortened when displayed and are still clickable. I thought we had this feature but I look at cenacle's recent post and it's all stretched to the sides and I have to scroll back and forth.

Hm, sorry bout that. I thought that the URLs were clickable. If not, I think there's an HTML code that can be used. I'll try to remember.

Use this [*url=http://url]URL text[/url] so Stoney doesn't have to scroll on the interwebs...LOL...all kidding aside scrolling does suck! (take out the * in the code and it'll work perfectly)

Syd, that is brilliant. I haven't tried it yet but I assume it gives you a word to click on without the huge long url showing. So where it says "URL text" you might put "link to source" or something like that and the words would show up and be clickable.

That's a good workaround but many sites have code already built in that detects a link which is over a set amount of length and you end up seeing something like this

http://ww.usa.org/info.../politics (http://ww.usa.org/info.../politics)

instead of a huge long one and it's still clickable plus you don't have to jump through any hoops to set it up in each post. The software does it for you.

Cen, I wasn't complaining that the links weren't clickable, I was complaining about the length of them. It stretches the page way out to the sides and you have to scroll back and forth unless you set your browser for really tiny text which is hard to read.

It must be standard type software because I've seen it on lots of websites. Andy, that would be in your area, I'm sure we can't set it up ourselves.

Yea stoney thats exactly what it does, makes a word link to a site. Its quite useful and i try to use it all the time. I have also seen the shortened url like you've described. Either or both would suffice.
