Title: 3 Great Psychedelic Bands from outside USA/UK
Post by: PsillyBoy on June 28, 2007, 06:18:15 AM
Any of you good freaks know of the following? They are all very much worth checking out!

Top of the list:
OS MUTANTES

from wiki: "Os Mutantes were formed in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1966 by brothers Arnaldo Baptista (bass, keyboards and vocals) and Sérgio Dias (guitars and vocals) and lead singer Rita Lee. They released two albums heavily influenced by the Brazilian Tropicália movement, which blended Psychedelic Rock with other forms of art."

Their first album (os mutantes) comes highest recommended, followed by albums 2 & 3 - I wouldn't go any further than that because they kinda loose it... but Rita Lee's 'solo' album (she pretty much re-united the mutants for it) called 'Hoje é o Primero Dia do Resto de Sua Vida' is well worth a listen...

They make really crazy music, comes in from all angles and shoots off where you weren't expecting it, mixing up old brazillian rhythms with psychedelic playfulness then doing a portuguese beatles impression, fuzz guitar, horns, mad scats & hi hats...

Next up:
LE ORME (specifically the album: Ad Gloriam)

from progarchives.com: "This CD features music from their very early period in the late Sixties (Le Orme was founded in 1967). The cover is typical 'flower power' art, I like it very much because of its creativity and many colours. The 11 compositions are simply structured but tastefully arranged and contain a varied instrumentation, from flute, acoustic - and electric guitar to keyboards like the piano, harpsichord and organalong warm vocals. Some tracks deliver a short, psychedelic inspired intro (like I Miei Sogni and Fumo) with echoes from Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. Other songs have hints from The Moody Blues, The Beatles and Rare Bird. To me this CD sounds as a pleasant progressive blend of beat, flower power and rock."

Ad Gloriam was their only psychedelic album, the title track is just beautiful, they're better know for their prog stuff which came after...

and not forgetting:
LADIES W.C.

from dustedmagazine.com:
"This late-’60s Venezuelan band is another fine discovery from Shadoks, who seem to be unearthing an endless stream of worthy, neglected psychedelic albums. The liner notes leave many questions unanswered, but the story appears to begin with Venezuelan-born American Steve Scott. A bassist and singer, he found two Venezuelan brothers, Mario and Jaime Seijas, and they then completed a foursome with Adib Casta. Inspired by the times, they recorded one album and became quite popular, playing regularly to large crowds. There’s no information, though, about where the strange name came from, or what happened to the group.

The 10 songs here represent, for the most part, prime acid rock. Recorded in 1969, it feels like it, with wah and fuzz represented in spades. Scott’s vocals are strong and clear, with that high-end wail you can hear in so many Nuggets-era bands. Showing some of their blues heritage, they pull out the harmonica for emphasis on a number of songs, with "Put That In Your Pipe and Smoke It" a particularly good example of Scott’s skill there."

They sound to me like a rough & ready 'Cream', unfortunately I can't find any of their tunes on the web, so you'll hafta do your own research, or just buy it on a whim...
