Post by: JRL on April 25, 2007, 03:24:29 AM
Q: What two things combined to end the era of the San Francisco sound?

A: Owsley got busted and someone invented a portable electonic guitar tuner.

I hitched out of the Midwest and spent the summers of '67 and '68 roaming up and down the Pacific Coast Highway.  (had to go back in the fall because I was to be a '69 graduate)....  Quite a culture clash  being in the Haight one weekend, then getting chased down by drunken rednecks looking to give a commie a proper haircut in central Illinois, the following week!!  Yeah, I'll post a couple of tales in a day or two...Gotta sift through the memory banks for an appropriate saga..............  sal

This thread reminds me of one of my fav dead shows ever. Unfortunately, due to circumstances which quickly spiraled beyond control, I remember almost nothing about  the performance in question.  Even listening to recordings of this show does almost nothing to jog my memory . (And that's rare for me.)

Interestingly, it was one of the few dead shows I ended up right in front of the center stage.  What I DO remember is Bobby taking a long time tuning up between songs early on and Phil making a comment ot the effect of how the band was taking longer between songs than they did back in the day....

After that, Bobby was a man possessed between songs. He'd tune like mad and then race up to the mike posing like a sprinter at the line waiting for the starter's gun while the others leisurely got their acts together.  But I remember almost nothng of the actual performance. Go figure.

Q. What did the Deadhead say when he ran out of doses?

A. This band sucks!
