Title: Links page
Post by: cenacle on February 10, 2005, 04:16:04 PM
it would be a really nice thing if we had a links page, ideally each one with a little annotation...could we use this thread to get from people suggestions for links to sites SPF wishes to recommend?

If SPF is not keen to have business banners up, would a 'recommended vendors' section in the links page be an idea ?  Maybe with a way of commenting on it.

Perhaps a link to Glider's Hanger for vendors, if Glider's Hanger is still out there?  It was a really good refernce point and review site.

Links, hell yeah.

I guess all the usual suspects should be linked to, i.e. erowid, lycaeum, that sort.  I don't know if it'd be inappropriate to link to other forums, if they are amenable, or to less-plant oriented organizations, such as MAPS or CCLE.  I think it might be a good idea to link to more botanically minded pages such as Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases.  I personally don't think it's a good idea to post vendor links.

What say all of you?

i like linking to wikis
and other excellent sources of online material

vendors should advertise - unless they're personal friends - then i think it should go by request - pms

keep all active commerce off the site.

I think that a link to vendors would be good, just for the fact that neophytes into the world of entheogens (like myself) have no clue what sites are reputable and which are not... and I'd trust the veterans here in an instant as far as which to order from, and which to avoid

A link repository sounds like a good idea.  Perhaps even putting a sticky thread or links in each current forum to further diversify.

Also I think, allowing a vendor advertizing sticky thread in the trade forum as well wouldn't neccisarily be a bad idea.  Unless we plan on using advertizing as a source of income again.

Well, im slightly biased on the vendor links...I think it is good to have vendor links but I can see an arguement against it.  I know that there are people here that are pretty strict on incrimination etc and maybe some would consider vendor links a step in the wrong direction.
Personally I'd side with the arguement thast its good to let newcomes ( or anyone ) aware of the good vendors.  Again though..I am biased!

I like to see, rather than just the links, an updated version of Glider's vendor review database.

That way, we'd all know whether the vendors are in business and that the vendors are reputable.

Otherwise, just a long list of vendors seems a trivial addition.

Anyone who has heard of google can find a vendor.

However, I realize it takes some effort and know-how to put the database in place and that it can be skewed by bogus entries.  Bugus information is worse than no information.

Hey, Winder, how would you like the honor of being the compiler of the vendor database? I like glider's page but as has been said, it's way out of date. There is a glitch on one, LER which is a total ripoff but has a decent rating due to the glitch. Someone said they were thieves but somehow rated them as 70 on a scale of 1 to 10. Clearly they didn't mean to do that and it should not have been entered but it brought them up to about 5 overall which they do not deserve.

What about spam? We've been spammed a bit already. I wouldn't mind an occasional mention of bush's site since he's a contributing member but people who only come in to spam are another thing.

No offense, Stoney, but I wouldn't relish in the honor.
I don't have the computer skills to do as suggested.

Admittedly, making a suggestion that I cannot implement is somewhat weak.

If there were neither links or a database, but just good people sharing information and comradery, I'd be content.

I like links. They're what lead to wandering the internet, making amazing and amusing discoveries.

Who was that who used to post those wonderful links to things like Republican condiments and the potted meat museum? I miss that person's contributions.

As for vendor reviews/ratings, sounds good but I don't know what's involved. Maybe WOM in the threads would be sufficient? I don't know enough to offer an opinion there.

okay... so it seems like one person compiling a long list of vendors and reviews and whatnot is a pretty daunting task... well then... why don't we just start a thread where members can post about vendors they've had experience with, good or bad... then, if someone was particularly motivated, it could be compiled into a list at the end, and made into a closed sticky...
