Post by: Maïwa on January 25, 2007, 01:23:52 AM
Hi everyone,

I have recently gone to the Redwoods in Nor-Cal.
Here are some shots i took.
The colder than usuall season made the mushroom photography very scarce.

Enjoy  :D

Yurok Native home

I like the structure of their homes and the fire pit inside.

The Yurok are Native Americans that have lived for at least 3,000 years near the Pacific North Ocean coast of Northern California & Southern Oregon USA.

Contact with settlers in 1850, the Yurok were faced with disease and massacres that reduced their population by 75%. In 1855, most of the survivors where sent to a reserve on the Klamath River.

Great photos.  One of my favs, is the one near the end, that shows the bend in the road, with the sun shining through the trees on either side of the road.

I have to agree, so far this is my best expedition yet, was not long though and alot of solitude, but i chose that. It was absolutly breathtaking.

I will see later in 2007 British Colombia the west coast of canada,
It should be just as breathtaking and the shrooms will be growing atleast.

Due to colder weather i missed most of the end of myco-season for some species i was looking for. Global climate change...

I could never tire of being among that scenery.

Whether Muir Woods or near Brookdale, CA, the region is awesome.

I lived in a cabin surrounded by redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains once upon a time. The back of the house was anchored to the hillside and the front supported by stilts that were twenty or thirty feet tall. Seventy wooden steps led from the gravel road/parking area up to the cabin. The two redwoods at the bottom of the property that passed feet from the corners of the hanging porch on their way to meeting the sky were the only reasons I wasn't too worried about the possibility of an earthquake. But even that feeling of safety was probably a pipe dream, as the base of the trees were at least at a fifty or sixty foot slide straight down the mountain.

One day I discovered a faucet behind the shack with a hidden water line running up the mountainside. So I followed a faint trail meandering up to a little open flat patch ringed by shrubs and found the bidness end of that irrigation system. It was a truly quiet and magical setting, except when the helicopters came around, which they often did.

Back then, it was not wise to go for joy rides or even to take a wrong turn on those mountain tops or hollows. Folks in those parts just didn't take to strangers, whether arriving by helicopter or otherwise. My buddy Chet was accosted by a couple of dudes with axes one day when he was trying to come up for a visit and ended up on the wrong side of the hill. He said the threat of being wacked by an ax made backing down those gravel switchbacks a piece of cake and at a good pace to boot.

Folks in that neck of the woods liked it quiet, alright. Matter of fact, word has it that when the Doobie Brothers, who had a place in the area, talked about putting on gigs at a little dive up in the hills some of the locals got a little nervous. And when  word finally got out and crowds of people started showing up for the festivities things got ugly. City folks were getting lost in the hills and ending up at places they were unwelcome. Cars were being parked where they didn't belong and shortcuts to the venue were taken through the woods. That little bar in the mountains burned down shortly after that. The case was ruled arson but no arrests were ever made as none of the locals were able to provide any information concerning possible leads.....

 You come down here and don't visit us locals...bleh!

I loved the pics, seems you stayed way up north, trinity are right?  I just love to call this place home.  I am posting pics from my 13mi hike last week in big basin, farther south, but still running on the same redwood bloodline.

Beautiful Neonaut, yes I normally stay a little more north in yes, your right Trinidad area, but this trip I also went to Clear Lake in Lake county, to see Mt. Konocti, no photos though.

Ya i recognise the name "big basin", neonaut.
